Nomads bowling overwhelms Hogs at Warnford

Nomads recorded a most resounding victory over the Hampshire Hogs at their fine ground in rural Warnford.  On a sunny day with blue skies and with a strong and deep batting line up it was no surprise that Nomads elected to bat upon winning the toss.

Youth was the order of the day as Tom Liversidge and Vic Kandampully opened for the Nomads, but both were dismissed cheaply, Liversidge caught and bowled by Hogs skipper Will Gabb and Vic adjudged LBW.  Ormiston came and went, despite playing one sumptuous drive for 4, caught behind off left armer Portal. Nomads were now in a spot of bother at 24-3 with Brockton and Al-Darraji at the crease. The pair began to re-build the innings, but in the face of some accurate new-ball bowling the going was tough.

Al-Darraji was looking in good touch and Brockton his usual nuggety-self. The Nomads numbers 4 and 5 got through to lunch with no further alarm and were moderately better placed on 88-3 from 26 overs. Bowling changes after lunch did yield considerably more runs with Daniel and Holberg going at a run a ball and the Nomads pair to their half centuries.

The Hogs scorer Vic Isaacs (computer & traditional scorebook on the go) curiously managed to muddle up El-Darranged and Brockers so that Brockers may have been deprived of some runs. Surely Vic Isaacs would never have muddled up Barry richards and Gordon Greenidge.

From a dogged rescue of the innings this pair were now both batting fluently and  increasing the Nomads stronghold on the game. The Hogs were starting to get a little ragged in the field with a few foolish over-throws, players not backing up. The visitors reached the comfort of 200 with no further alarms. Then two slices of luck, Gabb dropped Al-Darraji (tricky caught and bowled) and Brockton Chinese cut one that no one knew how it missed the stumps as it flew to the vacant boundary.

Brockton’s luck then ran out when he found mid-off via a lofted drive off Gabb to be dismissed for 90. which may well have been more. I'm sure Vic would have muddled up Barry Richards and Gordon Greenidge! Jemile, then did score a hundred slashing Portal over backward point to bring up three figures. The pair had added 202 in just under 45 overs, a mammoth partnership.

Joe Ireland joined Al-Darraji and the pair lambasted 34 in double quick time before the troops were called in with Nomads in ta strong position at 260-4 from exactly 60 overs.A very creditable recovery from 24-3. Hogs would get in the region of 55 overs back, and had a tricky 50 mins to negotiate before the tea break.

Nomads leading opening bowler Sajjad Shawl took the new cherry for the Nomads and struck almost immediately having Kelsey caught behind. Joe Ireland then joined the party having the dangerous looking Everett brilliantly caught behind by Wahi. Nomads were rattling though the overs and managed to get in 17 before tea (in 50 mins).  Hogs had made 37-2.

After tea  the home side's fortune plumetted   with skipper Gabb caught one handed by a jubilant Ireland for 0 and Holberg was then castled after an awful heave to leg. The procession continued after the introduction of old-stager Chris Page, he was quickly into his stride, Everett (snr) caught and bowled and then the obdurate Gunyon caught behind for 36, the only innings of note for the Hogs – some of their younger players could certainly learn from his watchful approach.

As an additional twist in the tale the home side were now 78-9, with Shawl castling Parkinson with his trademark toe crushing Yorker. However, numbers 10 and 11  proved hard to dislodge. Surely only a matter of time the Nomads thought. The 20 overs had started and no hint of the breakthrough. Ireland was re-introduced, Page bowled from the other end, Sajjad back into the attack and no sign of a wicket.   5 men were now stationed round the bat, + Kandampully under the lid at short leg.  Jemile was cajoled into bowling (understandably a little sore after his long innings) and that yielded no reward.

Brockton introduced himself into the attack and almost immediately found some in-swing. The 4th ball of his 2nd over trapped Cox plumb in front,  and Nomads began to celebrate. The last wicket had only scored 4 runs but soaked up exactly 100 balls and had taken the Hogs to a point where the Nomads were starting to doubt if victory would be achieved.

Nomads had won by 178 runs, one of their biggest margins of victory in recent times (and certainly their biggest against the Hogs). Chris Page had taken 4-21, Joe Ireland 3-38 and Sajjad Shawl 2-19. A superb bowling performance from the Nomads.

Nomads travelled in good spirits to the Thomas Lord pub for celebratory drinks after the match. This was unfortunately  the same country pub that Vic Kandampully was enjoying a romantic anniversary meal with Laura. Apologies for gate-crashing Vic!

The Brockton innings debate continues. Certainly it was a very valuable innings.

We are very grateful to all the efforts of Will Gabb and family without whom the game may never have happened

202 Runs between them, Thomas Lord would have approved!
