Nomads batting folds after lunch
In a match dominated by two innings it was the unblemished century by Aussie Small that took Merrow to victory on an enjoyable day interspersed with showers. Nomads won the toss and batted. Andy Peters was the first to fall bowled by a full in swinging delivery from Finch. Blake and Akhtar added 74 more runs before Blake was also bowled but by Jones. Yadav and Jamil looked to be mounting a very large score when Yadav aimed an airy fairy drive over extra cover but young Woodruffe ran some distance to take the catch confidently. Shortly afterwards lunch was taken at 153-3 off 28 overs.
After an excellent lunch with copious volumes of Port Nomads contrived to collapse despite two of the batsmen being teetotal. Three wickets fell for 5 runs including Jamil Akhtar for 80. Eighteen runs were added either side of a 23 minute break for rain before two more wickets fell at 177 and then number 9 Paul Fielding fell at 182. One eyed President Michael Blumberg suffering from Uveitis in his left eye joined Chris Page and these two added a further 11 runs before Page had a rush of blood and was bowled. 193 off 44 overs was way below par.
Although Yadav bowled Jones after he had hit Vithlani for six both bowlers were very wayward conceding 39 runs in six overs when tea was taken. After tea Paul Fielding slow left arm was introduced from the pavilion end and immediately presented more problems but he dropped Woodruffe off the last ball of his first over. Yadav was reintroduced at the A25 road end and was struck for 14 so veteran Chris Page replaced him next over. Page and Fielding induced regular errors but suffered punishment especially so with too many ancient fielders. Thus Merrow lost wickets steadily but at the other end Aussie Small was compiling an impressive innings using his feet to thwart the guile of the two veteran bowlers.
Yadav replaced Page and soon bowled Woodruffe junior. At the other end Zishan Rehman replaced Fielding and immediately bowled Finch. Merrow were now 172-7. Despite 4.1 more overs from Yadav and Rehman, Small and Tyler reached their target without mishap to win the match by 3 wickets with some 8.5 overs to spare.
Nomads lingered on what had become a fine summer's evening enjoying an excellent barbecue and several beers.
Over the years there have been a number of remarkable matches between Merrow and Nomads not least in 2001 after which 'Grumpy' Croomers sent in his account. In those days before the advent of King Grumpy Page it was Croomers who held that title.....read on
