But for one more over from Sajjad
Nomads were defeated in a close encounter vs St Edwards in Oxford on Sunday. Home to the first televised Sunday league fixture, where PomPom Fellow-Smith was dispatched for 6 boundaries in 1 over by a rampant Garfield Sobers. St Edwards is a stunning venue and at first glance the wicket looked an absolute belter.
Tom Brockton had no hesitation in electing to bat first after winning the toss and after 5 overs his decision looked to be a sensible one as the aggressive pair of Marcus Budgen and Phil “Doc” Bell tore into the home attack. Budgen started off with a clip off his pads for 4 and then a mighty six over square leg. Unfortunately he was LBW to the impressive Sutton for 21 and Bell was soon to follow, spooning a return catch to Hoyland for 15, who would end the day with a richly deserved 5 wicket haul.
The wicket was now playing the occasional trick and Charlie Peerless was clearly unsettled by two vicious lifters early in his innings as he tentatively poked a toed drive to mid-on. With lunch in sight Nomads were struggling and their plight was made even more serious when Andrew Smith and Sajjad Shawl were both dismissed on the stroke of the interval. Smith was unfortunate to get a leading edge back to Redfern and Shawl picked out the safe hands of Matthews at point on the very stroke of lunch. Nomads on the rack at 77-5. Brockton unbeaten on 27.
After lunch Brockton prospered and raced to a 50 from 63 balls. Alas, Patel was well taken at gully by the giant like figure of Locker-Marsh who then dived one handed in the same position to dismiss Brockton for 60 soon after. Nomads were now 119-7 after 33 overs and wicket keeper Danny Buckland’s stay at the crease was to be a short one as he fended a rising delivery to be on his way for 2.
The only meaningful partnership from the lower order was from the two veterans of the XI, ex- St Edwards pupil Simon Collins and Nomads President Michael Blumberg who shared an important stand to get Nomads up and over the 150 mark. Collins lambasting the ball to all parts in an impressive knock of 30 in just 27 balls. After his dismissal Blumberg looked to take matters into his own hands with a delicate sweep for 4 and then a pounding back foot drive. He was unfortunate to be cut down in his prime by umpire Stevenson who to Blumberg’s disbelief raised his finger for the most innocuous looking LBW. Nomads bundled our for 161 in just over 40 overs.
Early wickets were going to be vital in defending such a low total, and although Charlie Peerless dropped two sharp chances in the slips Nomads went in at tea with the opposition 65-4. Shawl and Karl Noll both taking two wickets a-piece. Peerless redeeming himself with a well taken catch at short cover just before the team brake.
After a delicious tea St Edwards took the fight to the visitors with both Delafeld and Matthews batting with a good deal of aggression and skill. Matthews was particularly savage on Sajjad Shawl and he was swiftly replaced by Andrew Smith. Brockton replaced Knoll and struck almost immediately having Matthews stumped after trying an audacious stroke. Buckland swift behind the stumps to whip off the bails and Matthews was found to be short of his ground after raising his back leg. Wright was then cleaned up 2nd ball and Nomads were back in the game with St Edwards stuttering. Shawl was re-introduced in the quest for quick wickets and he trapped the star batsman Delafeld LBW for a well crafted 58 and then knocked over the St Edwards skipper for a 3rd ball 0 with a wonderful Yorker. St Edwards were now 147-8 having lost 4 wicket for 4 runs in 14 balls. Could Nomads stage the most remarkable of comebacks?
Unfortunately experienced hand Franks had seen this all before and calmly knocked off the remaining 15 runs needed. There was a good shout for LBW (turned down) and a in-swinger that just missed leg stump and unfortunately beat Buckland and the lumbering Shawl at fine leg to go for 4 byes. Franks supplying the finishing touch by larruping Brockton through straight mid-wicket to give St Edwards a tense, but deserved 2 wicket victory. So Shawl never bowled the next over, what might have been!
St Edwards had fielded with great heart, and taken three impressive catches, Nomads in comparison had been generally lacklustre in the field and shelled three catchable chances. That was the difference between the two sides. With a relatively early finish Nomads retired to the Dew Drop in Summertown for some early evening beverages and to watch England wrap up victory in the 2nd Test v Australia.
