Lane and Bannerjee star as Nomads win a thriller at Maidenhead & Bray

Nomads won a closely fought contest at Maidenhead and Bray with several impressive contributions. Nomads club captain Tom Brockton won the toss and elected to Bat on what looked to be a very good (but used) wicket. Despite a seemingly innocuous new ball attack Nomads found themselves two down early on with Liversidge (run out) and Brockton (bowled neck and crop).

Ormiston and debutant Chris Hedges (Chesham CC) rebuilt the innings but then Hedges dragged on what can only be described as a complete long-hop off the bowling of former Bucks cricketer Quershi. Nomads 50-3 and in a spot of bother. Enter Jamie Lane who in partnership with Ormiston rebuilt the Nomads innings to get the visitors up to 100 when Ormiston larruped a short ball from Butler and was caught at mid-wicket for 41 .

Smith was then caught at mid-on but Lane found support from Saurabh Wahi and Sajjad Shawl and by the time Chesham leggie Chris Royals had smoked the final ball of the innings to the boundary Nomads were relatively well positioned on 206-8 from their allotted 40 overs. Jamie Lane had scored an even 50 before being run out.

After tea, and now in scorching conditions Nomads took the field, Shawl and Royals with the new ball. The pair bowled tightly and containing Parsons and King. Royals struck first removing King and then smith bowled Parsons with an absolute beauty. The batsman was deemed “not out” the over before when clearly stumped by Wahi, justice done with no further runs added to the score.

However, this brought Wildong and the afore mentioned Quershi to the crease and the pair progressed the score to 126-2 with 10 overs left. Chris Page was unusually expensive and his bowling, a little toothless compared to his usual guile and flight. Brockton turned to Shawl, who immediately had Quershi caught behind by a jubilant Saurabh Wahi, who impressed behind the stumps all afternoon. The game was now in the balance 7 wickets left, 9 overs left, 77 runs needed. What could have been a very tight finish actually petered out into a comfortable win for the Nomads with Brockton and debutant Bannerjee sharing 6 wickets in those 8 overs + a run out where Brockton and Page combined to run out the muscular Appavoo when he was sent up the garden path by his partner.

The coup de grass was supplied by none other than Page who dived high to his right to catch M&B captain Armstrong for 0 to end the match, a stunning grab from the former semi-pro goal keeper! M&B bundled out for 186 and losing their final 8 wickets for just 60 runs. Jamie Lane led the Nomads from the field, celebrating a good win at the pretty ground in Bray.

After the game the visitors enjoyed good hospitality and a few jugs of beer supplied by Lane + the M&B captain, Matt Armstrong. Since 2004 a midweek fixture, we look forward to returning to Maidenhead & Bray next season again on a Sunday.
