A wonderful Asian Cuisine lunch

Bowlers reign supreme at Haxted House

Nomads won a low scoring contest at the rustic setting ofHaxted House. Winning the toss Nomads elected to bat first working on the basis that the pitch would deteriorate further as the match progressed.  Brockton and Farrell added 40 for the firstwicket before Brockton was well caught at backward square leg. Farrell was thenalso on his way, caught and bowled. Sajjad Shawl, promoted up the order to giveit some long handle did not disappoint and although he rode his luck a little two trademark maximums were struck from his broad blade. But with lunch on the horizon Shawl and Jack Perman (making his UK debutant for Nomads) were also dismissed to lave the Nomads in a spot of bother at 91-5, Ormiston and Fanthorpe the not out batsmen.

The general feeling was anything around 120 would be very difficultto get with the bowling attack Nomads had at their disposal. However, beforeany more cricket was to be played both sides were treated to a sumptuous Thailunch in the garden at Haxted House. An hour flew by and wine flowed as theplayers enjoyed the warm weather, delicious food and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Back to the cricket, and clearly with full bellies andperhaps a little too much vino the Nomads collapsed like an England battingline up of the 1990s to loose their final 5 wickets for 17 runs in just 11overs. Ormiston was harshly adjudged caught behind but apart from his dismissalthe rest of the lower order simply capitulated, with even the usual obdurate Michael Blumberg succumbing to a rash stroke. The President not having batted for 6 weeks presumably forgot that young Nick McGill was at deep mid on and not some Senior Surrey cricketer! Nomads 108 all out with approx 60 overs of cricket remaining in the day. There would certainly be no draw!

Birthday boy Rupert Style marched out with captain & Haxted House owner Robin to open the innings for the home side. 3 balls later 'Birthday' boy Rupert Style walked back to the sanctity of the dressing room for 0, superbly caught by Div Mishra at short point. The skipper soon followed, bowled by a beauty from Mishra, and a flurry of wickets before the tea break meant that the home side were 54-7.  Shawl had taken 3 wickets, Mishra 3 and Page 1 (another fine catch by Kie Farrell at cow-corner).

The pitch was now playing all sorts of tricks and evengetting a bat on Shawl’s deliveries let along scoring off them was provingrather tricky.  Page continued to wheelaway and despite a easy chance going begging at cover and a spooned leadingedge evading Page as he back-peddled the Nomads fielded with a good degree of passion.  A wicket was gifted to the Nomads (run out via Ross Ormiston) and the home side slumped further into the mire. Page was replaced after 10 overs and Mishra supplied the coup de grass by bowling the no11 neck and crop with his arm ball to end the contest just as the20 overs were about to commence at 6:15pm.

The home side bowled out some 30 runs short of their target.Shawl’s figures were particularly impressive 18 overs, 9 maidens, 21 runs and 2wickets. It was also commented that the batsmen played and missed at least 40 times in that spell, albeit on a wicket that was taylor made for his style of bowling.  Div Mishra impressing again with 4 wickets, extracting some exaggerated turn from the dry surface, and Chris Page chipping in with an economical 3 wicket haul in his 10 over spell before and after the tea break.  20 wickets had fallen for substantially under 200 runs on a day where the ball definitely took charge over the bat.

The players lingered over a cold beer in the early evening sunshineand 4 thirsty Nomads took a trip to nearby Edenbridge in the search of more liquid refreshment before making the trip home.  Our thanks to our generous host Robin.

A superb Traditional English tea
