A weary centurion just fails to reach target so Nomads tie the match

Nomads attained one of the rarest results in cricket, a tie, on Sunday vs a strong Woking & Horsell side. For a club of relatively moderate means the fact the home club fields 5 league sides and three Sunday teams is testament to their excellent spirit. Nomads played their 1st XI, featuring mainly 1s & 2 Saturday league players + their massive South African pro.

Captain of the day, Andy Smith lost the toss and W&H batted. Fortunately the wicket played better than it looked, some early morning drizzle meant the ball skidded on rather than anything else although their was some variable bounce throughout the day, mainly for the taller seamers.

Nomads struck very early, Ahmed taken at slip by Stokes and the visitors should have had Wilson in the 4th over, Oli Smith dropping a regulation chance at 2nd slip of his brothers bowling.

The home side progressed without further alarm to 89 when the intro of "Flat Jack" offie Ben Butcher & leggie Chris Royals resulted in 2 quick wickets.

The home side rallied with Wilson and the afore mentioned South African Jones putting on 122 for the 4th wicket in good time. Shawl was re-introduced to the attack and along with Brockton pegged back the home side. Despite David Steele dropping Wilson in the 70s he was to fall short of a hundred when Shawl ripped out his middle pole for a well made 98. During this period Andy Smith also bowled tightly, restricting the W&H players.

The home side stuttered in the final 5 overs, when a score of 270 was looking very attainable they had to settle for 239-9 with Sajjad Shawl the stand out performer with 4-24 & 4 catches in the outfield.  Nomads would need exactly a run a ball to overhaul the target.

Captain Smith opted for the experienced pair of Jamie Lane and Steve Dummer, but alas Lane was dismissed without scoring,  looping tamely to cover.

In form Andy Stokes joined Dummer and he immediately found the bowling to his liking taking 25 of captain Ailing's next 2 overs. Nomads up with the rate but now 3 down as Dummer (ct & bld) and Oli Smith (bowled beck and crop) were victims in Fortescue's first two overs. Nomads pegged back but Stokes found good support from David Steele and in a swashbuckling partnership of 64 in just 9 overs.

Ayling turned to the big South African quickie and his did not disappoint, removing Steele (23) and then Shawl (8) in a bustling 4 over spell.

Club captain Brockton joined stokes with 94 needed from 13.4 overs. The pair batted with controlled aggression, Stokes nearing his hundred was starting to tire and with the field back there were plenty of singles on offer ("they won't win this in singles was a regular comment from the W&H players).

The pair chipped away, Fairey bowled nicely but without reward, Peters was deposited for 17 in 2 overs, including a massive 6 from Stokes and he reached his hundred in the 30th over to much applause from the Nomads and generous congratulations from a number of the W&H players. They realised this was a fine Innings. 5 overs left 39 needed.

The W&H skipper rolled the dice and recalled Waseem who went for 16 in 2 overs but at the other end Jones was back in the attack and used the short ball to good effect.  However with 5 needed for victory off the final over the Nomads were favorites, or so we thought.

Stokes played and missed at the first 2 deliveries , then a single, Brockton nearly felled by a Jones bouncer off ball 4, then a single, 3 off 2, Stokes a big heave and a miss off the penultimate ball and then a scampered 2 down to long-on off the final ball of the game, Jones unable to collect the ball cleanly at the bowlers end as Brockton dived in off a seemingly suicidal  2nd run.

Nomads had almost chased down a formidable target and fallen just short of victory, but a tie was the result of a very entertaining game of cricket played in good spirits.

As usual the Nomads were last out of the bar, out drinking the home side comfortably. Our thanks to Woking & Horsell for a well played fixture & also to Chris Page for umpiring.

Fixture secretary Paul Maloney was an interested spectator along with Kie Farrell who arrived later on in the afternoon to support the Nomads.
