                                                   A great day's cricket

O n a beautiful hot summer's day Nomads were fortunate to be asked for a second successive year to bat first having lost the toss. Hurlingham's skipper Sean Morris, formerly of Hampshire CCC, preferred to chase on the basis of a very exciting match the day before. Jemile Darraji had rung in injured and so Richard Brooke substituted. Wakers had arrived early for once yet he was out 2nd ball miscuing a long hop. Lascelles went not long after and Hill was caught at deepish mid off for 19 leaving Nomads at 64-3 in some disarray. Faisal Rana joined James While and these two put on 159 either side of lunch with a good number of spectacular shots that entertained the sprinkling of spectators. Faisal having hit 72 off 63 balls was the first victim of the afternoon whereupon Wycherley and While added a further 82 runs off 8 overs before James While fell for a mighy 167 just 9 short of Tim Bourke's record. Nomads declared on 311-5 after 5I overs .

Nomads bowling consisted of several spinners and one seamer Faisal. This combination was to have success after an opening stand of 42 reducing the home side to a perilous 146-6 in the 27th over. Much to Hurlingham's credit Andjel and former Nomad Alex Smith fought back posting 111 off 15 overs before Faisal bowled Smith and shortly after reaching a fine century Andjel was caught by Wakers off Rajabali. Wickes was soon stumped so Hurlingham were 266-8 with 5 overs to go. With fielders close around the bat the local 9th pair resisted stoutly to draw a very enjoyable match.

The club was well supported on the day with families, partners, members and friends and, of course, Vice-President Eric Warburg whose loyalty was split, he like our President also being a Hurlingham member. Most Nomads departed the club on a fine summer's evening only on discovering the bar was closed. Paul Wheeler, chairman of cricket remarked that we must have a result next year, why not? We look forward to it.
