Nomads batsmen lack the pace to chase down total

N omads travelled to Warnford to play Hampshire Hogs on Sunday and although there were several heavy showers en route the players were pleasantly surprised to arrive to see the covers off, blue skies overhead and an expectant (and athletic) looking opposition.

Missing several key individuals from last seasons encounter (James Griffith-While, Shani Kemalia, Steve Dean & Richard Stemp – who had still not found his dog according to the last report) skipper Tom Brockton won the toss and inserted the home side on what looked like a decent track.

As 11:30am ticked over on the pretty pavilion clock and Nomads were readying themselves to take the field it was noted that “strike bowler” Sajjad Shawl was not actually present, in fact he turned up at 12pm citing traffic related issues. Unfortunately the lack of Shawl resulted in a combination of Brockton and the ever-green Andrew Smith taking the new ball and Hogs reliable opening bat Oli Kelly was tucking into a few generous gifts offered to him. Smith was bowling a tight line and the warm conditions assisting his drift. Thankfully once Shawl graced the other 10 Nomads with his presence he set to work finding a good line and length.

The opening stand of 64 was not without incident and Ronnie Patel missed a sharp chance at mid off, but Smith’s perseverance was rewarded with a double strike in his 7th over as he dismissed his namesake courtesy of a cracking catch from Rupert Style at mid-on. Smith then pouched Aldridge for a 2nd ball globe as he adventurously attempted a pull shot only to balloon the ball up for Olli Smith to run back and nonchalantly take the ball one handed over his right shoulder.

However, from that point until the lunch break Nomads efforts were stoically defended by Kelly and McKenzie-Crooks and the Hogs took lunch well placed at 152-2, with Kelly 70 not out. The break at lunch worked (as it always seems to do) and experienced spinner and Phil “The Power” Taylor look-a-like Rob Woods produced a jaffer to strap McKenzie-Crooks LBW for 43. Kelly was still there and approaching his hundred when a snick through the slips evaded President Blumberg and Charlie Peerless as it raced to the vacant 3rd man boundary.

As hopes appeared to be dashed Style and then Shawl pouched two well taken catches to stem the flow of runs but Kelly had reached his hundred and by the time he departed for a well crafted 132 Hogs were pretty much ready to declare. Skipper George Adaire hit a couple of lusty blows at the end of the innings and despite some spirited fielding Nomads were going to require 288 to win. Andrew Smith was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-92 and well supported by Woods (2-58 from 18 accurate overs).

50 minutes were allocated for Brockton and Style to bat before the allocated tea break was taken and although they preserved their wickets no real inroads were made to the Hogs total. Nomads 34-0 at tea.

After the tea interval the Nomads openers batted with more purpose and Style’s more assertive approach yielded him 25 runs before he was bowled by spinner Gabb. Diminutive left-hander Ronnie Patel then joined Brockton and their enterprising partnership got Nomads up and over the 100 mark, when Patel unfortunately top-edged and intended pull shot, the ball ricocheting into his face. Luckily a split-lip and plenty of theatrical “claret” were the only results. However this clearly affected Patel and he was also bowled playing a horrible heave to leg with the score on 122.

Promoted up the order was the mighty Sajjad Shawl, fresh off the back of a brisk 70 the previous week at Ripley. However, he unfortunately picked out ex-Leeds goalkeeper Adaire who flew to his left to take an outstanding catch, Shawl on his way for a 4th ball duck.

Brockton was now in the mid 70’s and in partnership with Peerless added 61 off just 9 overs to take him to his century off 139 balls. Brockton then went aerial but picked out the safe hands of Smith at wide long-on for 104. Peerless kept up a decent rate of scoring but the introduction of some “flighted-filth” from Kelly brought immediate dividends as Peerless was stumped for a classy 46 and young Oli Smith departed in the same fashion moments later.

A few jars were sunk back in the bar after the match, and a good number of the Nomads then retired to the local watering hole to continue what had been a very enjoyable day and a closely fought contest.
