A great day, but Nomads agonisingly short at East Molesey

Nomads played a very entertaining fixture as part of the East Molesey President's day, kindly invited by President Malcolm Lawford and senior club member and former Middlesex cricketer Nigel “Roscoe” Ross.

East Molesey had a mix of players, some from the 1st XI & 2nd XI, others from the lower teams and Sunday XI, so an eagerly awaited contest was expected at the pretty ground in Surrey. East Molesey won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat, the wicket looked good and it was 30+ degrees, not a cloud in the sky.

Shawl and the evergreen Richard Clark took the new ball for Nomads, and although wicketless the pair, and especially Clark bowled accurately.  The game turned with the introduction of you know who, “professor” Page. In tandem with debutant Mark Firth they took 7 wickets between them, and page also ran out a batter, deflecting the ball onto the stumps when it was clattered back at him.  Page’s lobbs were causing all sorts of trouble, no doubt the better players had not faced this kind of bowling before (or not for many many years!).  Firth was oozing class,  the Bucks U19’s slow left arm deliveries extracting a lot of purchase from the dry surface and all the East Molesey players struggled against him. during his spell.

With the declaration in sight Shawl was recalled and the young East Molesey guest bowled a few accurate overs.  East Molesey declaring on 180-8. Nomads would receive 40 overs back to chase this total.

Tea was superb, plentiful and tasty, washed down with a glass of NZ sauv blanc from Pagey (thank you Pagey).  Brockton and Massey opened the batting for Nomads, who boasted a decent top7.  Massey had the bit between his teeth larruping two boundaries in the opening over.  Brockton also on his way with a crunching cut shot for 4 and Nomads rollicking along at over 6 an over in the early part of their innings.  Massey (44) played one lofted drive too many, but his innings had provided the impetus that should have resulted in a relatively easy Nomads win.

Ross Ormiston joined the Nomads captain and continued positive progress was made until Ormiston tried to pull a length ball which kept a little low and clattered into the stumps. The classy New Zealander on his way just when he was looking set. And now for the familiar Nomads collapse, Bradley & Shawl both trapped LBW for 0 in successive deliveries, Brockton also on his way (35) also LBW. Nomads were now in trouble, and with the East Molesey umpire’s trigger finger getting increasingly more itchy the appeals from the home side grew in ferocity and vociferousness.

Alan Ormiston, Ross’ son playing his first game for nearly 12 months struck the ball crisply but he too was a victim of the LBW as Nomads started to descend into the mire.  Old stagers Page & Clark were in the middle together, Pagey completely focused on getting Nomads over the line at a ground where he had “always taken wickets & always scored runs” in his long Surrey Championship career. He looked in decent touch playing a beautiful lofted drive to get the total required to under 10. However, the “trigger finger” had the final say as Clark was adjudged LBW despite getting in a large stride. Nomads all out just shy of the 180 target.

After the game, President Malcolm Lawford spoke eloquently and with considerable passion about the state of cricket in the UK as well as his fondness for East Molesey CC over a near 50 year playing career.  Nigel Ross was also on hand to thank the Nomads for representing the President on a very enjoyable sun-soaked day.  Our thanks to both for the generous invite and we look forward to returning in 2019.

Robbie Blackburn, now plying his trade for Stoke d’Abernon in the Surrey Championship was an interested spectator for much of the day. We are hopeful of his return to Nomads colours before the end of the season.  Kie Farrell and Brian Phillips were also in attendance, enjoying the contest.  Our thanks also to Nomads president Michael Blumberg for braving the 30+ degrees and umpiring.

Nomads played East Molesey 1950-1964 on the Tuesday of East Molesey's Cricket Week. The fixture was revived for two years 2004 and 2005. As yet we do not have the scorecards for any of these matches but that may change soon!
