Smith & son propel Nomads to victory at Reigate

Nomads made heavy work of chasing a small total vs Reigate Pilgrims on Sunday but eventually ran out winners by 2 wickets at their pretty ground in Surrey.

The home skipper Matt Wood won the toss and elected to bat but from ball 1 it was clear that Nomad Andrew Smith was on-song with the ball. His spell of 13 overs 2 for 13 was exceptional. Indeed, after 7 overs Smith had gone for just 1 run ! Robbie Blackburn was his usual bustling self and generated good pace and bounce from just short of a length.

Blackburn took the first wicket to fall courtesy of a cracking one handed catch from David Steele at short mid wicket. Blackburn was replaced by Ben Smith and after a stop-start first couple of overs he found his length and moved the ball around off the seam on a regular basis. Ben Smith took 4-28 from 12.3 overs and David Steele took 2 wickets as well as running out the accident prone Ranardanan for 20.

Charlie Dickins impressing behind the stumps and Danny Buckland showing what a versitile cricketer he is with a stonking catch at cover, running back down the hill and taking the ball over his shoulder at full stretch. Reigate Pilgrims bundled out for just 98 in a shade under 40 overs. With such a low total to chase Brockton rung the changes in the batting order but calamity almost struck with a number of players guilty of throwing their wickets away expecting someone else to get the side over the line. Dixon, Smith, Brockton and Williams all paying poor strokes andPetersrunning himself out in comical circumstances.

The side were grateful for gritty knocks from Danny Buckland, DavidSteele and Charlie Dickins to enable Nomads towin by just 2 wickets, butwith 15 overs of the 20 remaining time was never an issue chasing such a low target. A post match BBQ was enjoyed by all of the Nomads, and several of the Reigate side and as the game was completed earlier than one may expect it left plenty of time for socialising in the Red Lion pub after the game.
