Nomads overcome wet conditions and depleted Pilgrims

Nomads travelled to Betchworth on Sunday to play Reigate Pilgrims, the first time the two sides had met since the early 1980’s since an eincident with the infamous Charles Penn and the future ever so large President of Pilgrims.

Unfortunately two late drop outs meant that the home side were only 9 on the day so it was with little surprise that Tom Brockton elected to bat upon winning the toss. Nomads agreed to give Reigate two substitute players for their stint in the field. Unfortunately this generous decision back-fired as far as opener Olly Smith was concerned as he scooped an attempted pull to Nomad Ronnie Patel who claimed the catch off the bowling of the impressive Wise.

Brockton joined the in-form David Williams and the pair progressed to 30 without further alarm until Williams larruped a half volley straight to Kanagarajah who held a fine catch off the bowling of Guy Mitchell. A yard either side and Williams would have prospered with another boundary. Brockton, after a brief assault on the bowling of Wise that yielded three consecutive boundaries throught the covers, nicked a lifter to be caught behind and Hill was soon to follow, bowled by an innocuous slow delivery from the Allan Lamb look-a-like Burgess. Nomads in a spot of bother at 81-4 after 20 overs.

Enter Andrew Smith who laid siege to the Reigate bowling smiting two maximums over long-on and a flurry of boundaries in a quick fire 42 from just 40 balls. His departure brought the mighty Gautom Menon to the crease and in tandem with Mike Plant added a further 49 runs in the final 9 overs before the declaration. Menon finishing the innings in some style with consecutive 6’s from the bowling of Wise whose final over went for 16 to spoil his earlier work with the new ball. Nomads declaring on 187-5 after 39 overs. A good score considering the slow outfield and wicket which was now offering some considerable variable bounce.

Pace-ace Ben Smith opened up for the Nomads, instantly causing problems for both opening batsman. David Steele, impressive with the ball in his debut season for the Nomads was once again right on the money, extracting turn and bounce from the damp surface. He struck first temping Burgess into a drive that was pouched by Brockton at 2nd slip. Clearly not wanting to be out-shone Ben Smith was tearing in from the pavilion end and royally cleaned up both Jandardanna and George with stunning deliveries, the middle stump up-rooted on both occasions. After 16 overs Reigate were reeling at 34-3 and the 188 needed was looking a long way off. Ben Smith was removed from the attack after bowling an impressive 9 overs for only 11 runs and claiming two prize wickets.

As the 20 overs started Andrew Smith and Peter Sumner were introduced to the attack, but where Smith was his usual accurate self Peter Sumner was taking something of a battering from the strong wristed Kanagarajah who was flaying him to all parts of the ground. One Sumner over was despatched for 19 and he was removed from the attack after 5 expensive overs. Smith out-foxed Kanagarajah with his arm ball and although skipper Rob Burnside was proving obdurate in his defence wickets were tumbling round him. The hapless Guy Mitchell got a golden globe, easily taken by Menon at gully and Brockton / Plant knocked over the tail with consummate ease. Brockton trapping Wise palpably LBW to end the match. Reigate all out for 113 with 4 overs of the allotted 20 remaining.

Victorious Nomads retreated to the Red Lion pub for a few celebratory drinks and to further socialise with the friendly opposition. We look forward to our trip to Reigate Pilgrims (and the Red Lion pub) in 2014.
