Tom Brockton reports.

On one of the warmest days of 2011 Nomads travelled to picturesque Dulwich to play against Streatham & Marlborough. Boasting a well balanced side, and a mixture of youth (Mickey Callo - a 15 year old colt who currently plays for Wanstead) and experience (Michael Blumberg - a 69 year old who will play for just about anyone) plus a few chaps who are somewhere in the middle of the two.

S&M (no Carry On esq titters please) were under the impression this was a 1pm start so after most of the Nomads players turned up between 1:15pm and 1:45pm they claimed the toss on what looked like a decent wicket, hard and firm and elected to bat. They didn't know we had Mickey's cousin Steven Callo playing, a grade cricketer from Australia who was over in the UK for the remainder of the season. All of 6"4 and build like the proverbial brick sh@t house he roared in down the hill and quickly had both openers calling for their lids. A few snicks went through the slips, understandable as Callo was bowling at 80mph+, experienced keeper Keith Alexander was standing fully 20 yards back and taking he ball above waist height! Callo quickly accounted for one of the openers and after uprooting his off stump the bail was to be found resting next to the sight-screen!!

Mickey Callo was having less luck from the pavilion end, as a succession of short balls were pulled for 4 by the impressive Knott who looked like a cricketer of some promise. He was joined by the S&M skipper Bartolo who used the forward defensive to good effect in the early part of his innings. Richard Clarke replaced S. Callo and Sajjad Shawl replaced M. Callo. Clarke, looking like a character from the Darling Buds of May and wearing flannelled trousers and a 1970's work-shirt bowled exceptionally well, beating the bat 3 times an over and was unlucky to be wickeless, indeed, another day he could have taken 4 or 5 wickets in his 8 overs. Shawl struck almost immediately, Knott driving straight to Brockton at cover to took the chance offered to him. Shawl was in the wickets again in the next over, the diminutive Afghan cricketer Sawar spooning up to the bucket hands of debutant Bryan Ward at wide mid-on.

Shawl was replaced by Ward and he quickly took 2 wickets although Bartolo did tuck into a few of his deliveries to pass 50. Brockton replaced the luckless Clarke from the golf course end and quickly knocked over the S&M skipper for 57, quickly followed by Harris and senior player Reardon. S&M had collapsed from comparative the safely of 77-2 to 180-8. Mickey Callo was recalled and picked up the final 2 wickets, the former courtesy of some fine glove-work from Alexander who whipped off the bails for a smart stumping.

Tea was taken and Nomads were confident of chasing down a well under par score of 181. Steven Callo and the big hitting Shawl opened for Nomads but Shawl was carelessly run out for just 1 via a direct hit and Brockton followed in the same way, also run out via a direct hit for 16. Callo was looking a classy cricketer and punished anything with width, although his running between the wickets was cause for occasional concern. Dickie Fanthorpe fresh from a half century on tour in Shropshire added 50 with Callo but he spooned to cover when looking set, however Callo found much needed support in the shape of Debbie Curtis who batted very nicely indeed.

Curtis (11) and Callo (83) were both dismissed in quick succession with and the task of knocking off the 50 odd runs needed for victory were left to Bryan Ward (31) and Keith Alexander who achieved this with consummate ease with over 5 overs remaining.

A very solid performance for Nomads and back to winning ways after 5 losses on the bounce. Plenty of ale was supped in the compact S&M bar post match with skipper Michael Blumberg delighted with the teams performance.
