Nomads batting fails the challenge

Nomads came unstuck against a strong Wanderers XI on Sunday at Merrow CC where the standard of cricket was high from both sides. Wanderers CC giant of a skipper Dan Taylor won the toss and has no hesitation on electing to bat. Unsurprising as he had two ex-county players, an ex-minor county player and Merrow’s Australian overseas-pro in his side.

With Nomads devoid of their usual opening bowling options (Shawl in India, Schmidt unavailable, Smith in France) Sachin Puri and David Steele took the new cherry for the visitors. Australian overseas-pro Teale began to launch a savage attack on both players, taking an instant liking to Steele, sweeping him twice for mighty maximums. Steele’s reply was swift and cunning as his first delivery from round the wicket spun and Teale was powerless but to lob a leading edge to Saif Khan at mid-on.

Unfortunately this brought in ex Herefordshire minor county player and Esher CC star Scott who promptly got off the mark by launching Sachin Puri high over extra cover and out of the ground for 6. His care-free attitude to batting clearly began to rub off on his partner Abbott and the pair accelerated further to the point that the hundred came up in just the 13th over. Tom Brockton introduced himself into the attack and he dismissed both Scott and Abbott for 56 and 59 respectively courtesy of fine catches from Kie Farrell and David Steele. Gill was soon also on his way lobbing a delivery to Farrell at short cover for just 13, also off the bowling of Brockton, but at lunch Merrow were well placed on 208-4 from 38 overs.

Lunch, and what a lunch it was! Possibly the best lunch of the season was served with a choice of delicious sticky toffee pudding or key lime pie (or both if you are David Steele!).

After the lunch break Nomads bowled and fielded with a great deal of passion and enthusiasm to try and stem the flow of runs, ex-Northamptonshire player Rob Tindall swatted and shovelled his way to a 50, although he was given a massive reprieve when Steele appeared to trap him plumb LBW only for umpire Maloney to answer in the negative. Aussie Balch also scored a patient half century as The Wanderers progressed without any further alarm to 278-6 from 50 overs before declaring. Leg-spinner Saif Khan bowled nicely without reward, although Charlie Peerless did put down a regulation catch at wide gully off the leg-spinner. A sporting declaration we thought, but with a fine bowling line up and the wicket now taking prodigious turn this was to be a tricky run-chase. Steele (16-3-83-3) and Brockton (9-2-38-3) were the pick of the bowlers for the Nomads.

Kie Farrell and Brockton opened up for the Nomads but Farrell and indeed Sachin Puri were both dismissed by the Australian Teale, Farrell having his off stump pegged back with an in-swinger and Puri feathering a catch behind. Nomads 27-2 early in the piece. Mighty Mouse Andy Hill joined Brockton and added close to 50 for the 3rd wicket. Hill was tucking into a few loose deliveries from off-spinner Lowe and after the seamers were removed from the attack Brockton was embroiled in a real battle with skipper Taylor who was bowling an immaculate length and getting extraordinary turn and exaggerated bounce from his 6”5 frame. Taylor dismissed Brockton for 32 the over before tea with a classic piece of left arm spin that Brockton could only glove behind to the keeper. Nomads 78-3 at tea.

After the tea break Taylor struck again to controversially dismiss Hill who was given out caught at the wicket after kicking away an innocuous Taylor delivery, the bemused batsman on his way for 32 after looking well set. Keeper David Williams and Gautom Menon then counter-attacked to get Nomads over the 100 mark but Taylor again struck courtesy of a fine catch at first slip by Balch to dismiss Williams for 26. Menon was then bowled for 20 playing all around a full ball from Scott and Nomads were now in dire straights but Shepherds Bush leggie Saif Khan was playing nicely and taking on both Taylor and Scott with controlled aggression.

He moved seamlessly into the 30’s and in partnership with David Steele looked to be putting Nomads into a position where the total was potentially attainable. Unfortunately Steele was taken at short leg by Teale off the bowling of Tindall and last man Peerless was cruelly run out backing up as Khan drilled a straight drive back to bowler Dogra who inadvertently palmed it onto the stumps leaving Peerless agonisingly short of his ground. Nomads all out for 194 with some 14 overs remaining. Saif Khan stranded on 44 and just 6 short of his maiden Nomads 50.

An enjoyable match, a generally good standard of cricket throughout and our thanks to Dan Taylor and everyone at Merrow CC for looking after us and for a wonderful lunch/tea from Mrs Taylor!
