Nomads batsmen fail the challenge on deteriorating pitch

Nomads opened the season in UK on a damp chilly day at Barnes Commons. Unfortunately we suffered a late withdrawal so played with ten though our opponents lent us a fielder throughout their innings. Barnes Common won the toss and batted  and the openers set about Nomads opening bowlers Robbins and Croom-Johnson. In fact both Nomads bowlers beat the bat especially Croom-Johnson. Juriansez hit an early six but then when into his shell.Johri his partner fell lbw to Croom-Johnson whereupon in strode Surrey Over 50s big hitter Beri. Ormiston replaced Robbins and at once had Beri miscuing to long off where the catch was not accepted. Two balls later his miscued to long on but the normally safe hands of Rohan Ghosh failed  on this occassion. this lapse was to prove costly as Beru smashed a quick eighty.

Rohan Ghosh bowled a tidy spell and was rewarded with the wicket of opener Juriansez. The returning Robbins dismissed Suraj Vithaini  cheaply and the rest of the batting did little with Saj Ayub picking up two wickets. Eventually Ormiston bowled Beri  for 81 with one that bit, turned and lifted to take the off bail. Hope and Pitcher added  a further trustrating twenty by the close. Nomads had the target of 229 to win.

After an excellent tea Nomads opened with Ghosh and Ormiston. It was soon apparent that the pitch which had played surprisingly well at the stat of play had changed its nature for   non bouncing balls were to come with increasing frequency. Ross Ormiston was first to go falling lbw to Suraj. Rohan in fine form had reached 43 when he was quite undone by a non bouncing short ball and was trapped lbw by Swann, 78-2. If Nomads were to get anywhere near the target one at least of the top three had to build abig innings. It was thus a serious blow when Saj was adjudged lbw on 24,103-3. in the 22nd over.

For the remaining nomads batting to score 129 off 13 a genuine miracle ws required. Eveyone but Tony Ford did hit a boundary or two  but in fact five wickets fell for a mere 36 runs and Nomads were all out with nine balls remaining. Oliver Croom-johnson was left not out 9.

A sound thrashing for Nomads and yet both teams moved on to the Coach & Horses in Barnes High Street and quaffed many an ale before bidding farewell.
