Saj Ayub final over wins the match

Nomads prevailed over a mostly young Highgate side with a dramatic finale to game. Highgate required 7 runs to win with two wickets left. First ball was a dot ball, second ball bowled number 9 and the next ball trapped number 11 lbw. Phew!

Nomads had won the toss and batted. Jeremy Lascelles and Olly Logan opened and had put 72 when Logan was undone by a grubber and caught lbw on the back foot for a fluent 32. Saj Ayub now joined Jeremy and these two added 139 before Saj was also undone by the occassional low bounce on 73. Jonathan Ssebanja now joined Jeremy who was nearing his ton while the declaration loomed. Johnathan hit three sixes but attempting a fourth off a ball with low bounce he smashed it rocketlike to long on who took the catch with a casual confidence that astonished all at the ground since the catcher was easiliy the oldest player in the match. There was much debate as to whether we should delay the declaration to enable Jeremy to complete his century but with the fielders protecting the boundaries Jeremy was struggling. He had reached 91 when the last over was signalled. He missed the first ball, smashed the next along the ground to a fielder and then in utter frustration swung an almighty slog and was bowled. Nomads had decared on 254.

After an excellent tea, a mixture of English and Thai, Nomads opened with Ssebanja and Alex Foulds. Ssebanja regulaly beat the bat but it was Foulds who took the first wicket inducing an inside edge onto the stumps from a wide drive by Gillam. Sudell joined Matthews and these two added over a hundred despite maidens from Ssebanja. Both smote amd mis-smote Chris Page for a load of boundaries taking full advantage of the short straight boundary. Andrew Gregory replaced Ssebanja and induced a wide swish from Sudell which Mark Oppe caught and then a miscued aerial drive from Matthews which was caught by Ssebanja,142-3.

Highgate were well placed to chase down the target and in the very young Rowson they had just the batsman to do it. Saj Ayub replaced Page and reduced the run rate but it was some smart fielding from Damon Wilson that took the next wicket with the run out of Crime,176-4. Blackett and Rowson added 40 whereupon Saj Ayub struck twice first removing Blackett lbw and then Russell clean bowled,216-6.

Nomads now somewhat assisted Highgate's cause as two of Nomads athletic fielders somewhat over cooked their throw from the boundary to the keeper and overthrows resulted much to the vociferous glee of Highgate and supporters. Young Rowson played some cheeky boundary shots and seemed likely to take Highgate to victory when he was deceived by Saj and misdrove to be caught and bowled,233-7.

Chris Page had been reintroduced at the other end instead of Gregory to encourage the tail to chase and he bamboozled the chubby Hayes who aimed mightily but was bowled gently off stump,237-8. The ninth pair cobbled together some runs so that by the end of the penultimate over there 7 runs required to win. Then Saj Ayub magic quashed Highgate's aspirations. Nomads had won.

Many Nomads lingered afterwards in the clubhouse as the rain poured down enjoying the Thai food as well as the booze. In particular Match Manager Andy Collins was mighty pleased with the result as his afternoon's bar tab was to show.
