Depleted Nomads suffer rare defeat at Abinger
Nomads declined from 13 to 7 on the day due a flurry of drop outs and miscommunication. Abinger by arrangement lent us two players, brothers Rob and John Pullen both of whom made useful contributions.
Nomads won the toss and invited Abinger to bat on a sunny afternoon and wickets fell steadily, the first a stunning slip catch taken by septuanarian Charlton Lamb.John Pullen removed three and young 'Woody' a fourth. Pullen was taken out of the attack and replaced by Ollie Smith's wrist spin. Ollie soon had a wicket and was unlucky not to have more as he twirled through 13 well flighted overs.
Ayling and Phillips-Smith not without some luck added a valuable 37 before both were bowled by Blumberg.Rob Pullen repleced Ollie and took two wickets making five for the family(but no jug!) and Blumberg bowled Syan so Abinger had reached 128.
Not exactly a challenging total but without one regular top five batsman and minus the one we had expected still a total to be defended. Paul Furness and Rob Pullen added 30 for the first wicket before Rob hit a long hop straight to a fielder.Paul Furness who had looked very comfortable making 21 was bowled on 45.'Woody' hit a splendid six only to be bowled next ball reducing us to 59-3. Debbie Curtis joined Charlton Lamb and the innings lost momentum.Eventually Debbie hit a three and Charlton ran it but was soon out lbw,72-4.Richard 'KC' Clark joined Lamb and these two looked likely to take us to victory when Lamb miscued a Siderfin long hop grubber and was caught.
Despite serious advice to young Ollie to block it out while clark took us to a win he inexplicably swished across a long hop that kept low.John Pullen was then bowled first ball by another low bouncing siderfin special. enter Blumberg on a hatrick which was saved despite the failing light. the plan now was to give as much strike to Richard to win the game. Having added 18 but with 15 more required to win and seven balls left Clark went for a big hit only to be caught by Phillips-Smith diving forward. So we had lost by 14 runs with one over to go. Had we been eleven and had not borrowed players from Abinger a draw would have been a respectable result if unlikely. In the event it was right to go for the win.
No one could remember when Nomads had lost at Abinger so we will be definitely asked back next year.
