Robbins sets the tone as Nomads win in a match dominated by the bowers

Nomads romped to a 5 wicket win at North London side Crouch End Calthorpe CC.  A 40 over game was agreed, mainly due to the threat of localised showers, and fortune favoured both sides despite the overcast and chilly temperate the fixture was played in almost entirely dry conditions.

Nomads won the toss and elected to field first, unsure of what a competitive total would be on the relatively small ground and rain affected wicket. With new ball in hand the pairing of Robbins and Vithlani put the brakes on the home side. Robbins was exceptional as his figures bare testament to, and Vithlani was also very accurate and unlucky not to have taken two or three wickets.

Robbins spell contained only one bad ball (his last) and he bowled a beauty to clean up Crouch End's top order batter, with a sharp off-cutter beating his defense and clattering into the top of off stump.

The Crouch End run rate was sedate to say the least and at the half way mark only 47 runs were on the board. Nomads had several scalps and straight after the break Page trapped the home sides danger man LBW with a low full toss that the bemused batsman tried to sweep, and missed.

A short spell from Andy Marshall (warming up nicely for the Middlesex vs Surrey over 50s final the following day) was followed by destructive bowling from spinners Mishra (off-spin) and Arora (chinaman) including the wicket of the hapless Greenslade for a 1st ball 0, not getting to use his new Kookaburra he had spoken so much about before the game. Three run outs did not help the home side either (Vithlani, Brockton & Robbins all profiting from some suicidal running between the wickets) and Crouch End were bundled out for just 113 an over short of the allotted 40.

A tasty tea was put together, Ross Ormiston more intent with getting the tea ladies number than tucking into her food, and the only rain of the day fell during this period so no play was lost. Nomads opened with Brockton and home favourite Alexander who signalled their intent straight away taking 10 off the first over of a man who the home side referred to as “fast bowler”,  man whose run up was perhaps quicker than the slow wobbly deliveries he sent down. Unfortunately Nomads lost their way with Alexander and debutant Ganesh out in quick succession.

Order, in part, was restored by Brockton as he moved into the 30s with a cut shot for 4, but Vithlani was out to a soft caught and bowled after he had hit the shot of the day, a sumptuous cover drive. Chris Page, promoted up to no5 (“wouldn’t mind a bat from time to time”) was out cheaply, snicking off to a sharply turning off-break, but Nomads had experienced former pro Ormiston coming in at no7 and both he and Brockton got Nomads over the line with no further alarms. Brockton finishing proceedings with a lovely drive on the up through extra cover for 4 to win the game and raise his bat for a well crafted half century in the process. Ormiston a class 20 odd not out. Nomads knocking off the runs with plenty of overs remaining.

Nomads and many of the opposition players tucked into a few ales after the game, the relatively early finish meaning there was still quite a bit of light left in the day. Home favourite Keith Alexander was on top form, sharing tales from Nomads tour to India in 2003, much to the amusement of all concerned
