Nomads bowlers roll over Abinger

Nomads secured a comprehensive victory against Abinger Hammer on Saturday with a number of notable performances.Nomads captain Tom Brockton lost the toss and the visitors were inserted on a wicket made rather soft by the overnight rain. Although clouds loomed menacingly throughout much of the day amazingly we stayed dry.

Openers Charlie Peerless and Jeremy Lascelles started brightly and registered 50 for the first wicket in good time. However Peerless picked out the lone fielder on the leg-side rope for a boundary laden 26 and Lascelles followed soon after for well crafted 25. Nomads stuttered along for the next few overs losing wickets on a regular basis. Richard Fanthorpe was adjudged LBW for 2 and Andrew Smith was taken at long-on looking to clear the short leg-side boundary. Jamie Dixon was then also dismissed leaving Nomads reeling on 59-5, having lost 5 wickets for 9 runs in the space of 6 overs.

Brockton joined Barnes Common all-rounder Suraj Vithlani and began to re-build the innings. The pair started cautiously but added an important partnership to get Nomads up to and over the 150 mark.Vithlani was looking in fine touch and finding the boundary (and the stream over the boundary!) on a regular basis. With Vithlani in sight of a well deserved half century he drilled a full-toss back at Brockton who failed to get out of the way of the shell like drive and was thus struck painfully in the ribs and stopped a certain boundary. Unfortunately this left Vithlani stuck on 49 and sods law dictated that he was to be bowled the very next ball just missing out on what would have been a fine half century.

Hugo Morris joined the now injured Brockton and they added a further substantial partnership for the 6thwicket and got Nomads up to 210-6 declared. Morris contributing a fine 44 not out and Brockton 41 not out. Dave Ayling was the pick of the Abinger Hammer bowlers although his 2ndspell took some punishment, particularly from the broad blade of Hugo Morris.

After a delicious tea Andrew Smith was quickly into his stride, clearly keen to make amends for his earlier duck.Smith claimed 3 wickets in a fine spell of bowling and Peter Sumner from the pavilion end was also metronomic in terms of accuracy also taking three wickets, two well held by Jamie Dixon who was impressive in the field all afternoon. However the Abinger opener Marcus Robertson was stead-fast and obdurate. His innings was to be cut short by Smith who nipped one back through the gate to end his vigil. Abinger were now in all sorts of trouble and 210 was looking a long way off.Their cause was not helped when “golden arm” Charlie Peerless claimed a wicket in his first over and Ali Bulgrani capped a fine day for Nomads by taking 3 wicket for just 10 runs in a fine spell of bowling. The final wicket fittingly was bowled neck and crop by Bilgrani, the bemused left hander leaving a seemingly innocuous delivery that turned sharply and took his leg stump, clean bowling him round his legs.

Abinger all out substantially short of three figures and Nomads had run out winners by over 120 runs. Our thanks to Abinger Hammer for hosting us and for an enjoyable match. Nomads stayed long savouring the fine evening over many apint of good real ale and lager.
