Nomads lingered long into the evening quaffing Surrey Hills Bitter and Lagers

A good day for David Steele

Nomads travelled to the pretty village of Abinger Hammer on Saturday for what is always an enjoyable match in an idyllic rural setting. Boasting a strong side with plenty of batting and bowling options Tom Brockton had no hesitation in batting first upon winning the toss.

Steele & Peerless (sounds like an 80’s crime fighting duo) opened up and put on a mammoth stand for the first wicket. Against relatively innocuous bowling Steele cashed in and put the bowlers to the sword compiling a robust 50. After a more watchful start Peerless was getting the public school cover drive out of the locker and with field now spread there were plenty of opportunities for singles. Steele reached his 50 first, soon followed by Peerless (who then promptly got out), replaced by Jamie Dixon. With Steele charging along at a merry rate he was now into the 90’s with a series of crunching cut shots and a smite over long-on for a maximum. However, he was not to reach a maiden Nomads century and was dismissed 8 short for a well crafted 92.

Jamie Dixon was then caught and bowled but Brockton and Ross Ormison got Nomads up to and over the 200 mark. Brockton finishing unbeaten on 60 and Ormiston a valuable 23 not out. Nomads had posted 234-3 in just over 40 overs, a formidable total on such a slow wicket. After a cracking tea Nomads took the field, but with only 1 new ball being used for the match (normal Abinger format) Nomads may have struggled to bowl out the home side.

Veteran seamer Richard Clarke was in fine form and was quickly into the act, well supported by off-spinner Gautom Menon and the home side were quickly behind the run rate. No one in the Abinger ranks seemed prepared to dig in and build and innings with most of their players content to hit a few boundaries and then get out playing an audacious stroke. Clarke was well rewarded with 3 wickets in an impressive spell of seam and swing bowling and David Steele (who else? after his 92 earlier on in the day) also bowled impressively to take any semblance of hope away from the home side with three wickets, including a stonking caught and bowled, one handed just off the turf. Brockton mopped up the tail, including the Abinger skipper and Nomads had rolled out the home side for just over 100 with a good number of overs of the last 20 still remaining. Charlie Dickens should get a special mention for a no-nonsense display with the gloves, two smart stumpings and a well snaffled catch for the Follies Farm stalwart. Always nice to have Charlie in the Nomads ranks.

Most of the Nomads (and Abinger) cricketers lingered long into the evening, enjoying a few drinks and the spectacular scenery at Abinger as the sun set behind the trees. Our thanks to Abinger CC for their continued hospitality, one of the prettiest grounds and most friendly sides we have the privilege of playing.
