Richard Clarke and Suraj Vithlani enjoy their first visit to Jesus College
Debutant Juriansz stars as Nomads win at Jesus College
Nomads recorded a 37 run with at the beautiful setting of Jesus College, Cambridge on Saturday. After the deluge on Friday there was some doubt that the game would be played at all, but the impressive facilities at the ground ensured the match was ready to commence as scheduled at 1pm
Nomads were inserted and Brockton / Style put on a robust 92 for the first wicket before Brockton was bowled for 54, registering 1,000 runs for Nomads in 2015 in the process. Style anddebutantKeith Juriansz then forged a swashbuckling partnership of 74 in good time to push forward the Nomads advantage.
Style was adjudged LBW for a well crafted 58, missing a low full-toss, and then Juriansz retired after reaching his half century which was full of elegant strokes, the Surrey over 50's cricketer looking a class act.
Suraj Vithlani then offered some robust blows to get Nomads up and over the 200 mark and despite a flurry of wickets (Vithlani, Pitcher & Clark) the visitors were able to declare just shy of 40 overs and on a total of 224-6. On such a slow wicket this was a formidable total.
Probably the best cricket tea of the season was enjoyed by all concerned, as well as eager supporters from the Vithlani clan and the Nomads took the field in good spirits able to bowl in the region of 45 overs back at Jesus College.
Experienced seamer Richard Clark was in top form from from ball 1 and in tandem with Charlie Fellows-Smith (who really did enjoy the spread for tea) reduced the home side to the depths of 37-4. Clark was nipping the ball about and his 11 overs yielded 2 wickets and just 24 runs conceded.
Now Jesus had somewhat reversed the batting order and as Grimshaw and Wilson had done most of the bowling they were demoted in the order thus the scoreboard suggested a worse position than they were really in and so it proved!
With an aggressive field set Wilson and Grimshaw set about the Nomads attack looking to restore balance to the match. Brockton and MacDonald Barker were bashed out of the attack, only taking 1 wicket each, Nomads now regretting only having 10 players and some elder statesmen in the field as boundaries started coming at quite a rate so much so it seemed that defeat could be staring Nomads in the face.
Suraj Vithlani and Keith Juriansz restored order taking vital wickets including that of Wilson for 36 and in particular, Grimshaw for 96, just short of what would have been a fantastic century.
With both of these players now back in the pavilion Nomads went on the attack once more and victory was secured when Bowly was caught by Vithlani off the bowling of Juriansz. Jesus College all out for 187 with just under 6 overs of the 20 remaining.
After an enjoyable contest the teams retired to a local pub for plenty of banter, Brockton, Style and Juriansz getting in jugs for their half centuries. We look forward to travelling to Jesus College in years to come and thank the home side for their hospitality.
