Nomads Innings runs out of steam
Both teams had suffered drop outs back were back to ten each on the day and both had a woman in the team. Jesus won the toss and batted on a sunny afternoon. Sanjay Beri soon had opener Edmunds lbw in his second over. At the other end Brockton was struggling for line and length and Wilkinson and Moore punished the loose balls with many a boundary, some of which may have been stopped had the fielders not been quite so ancient. Jesus had reached 67 when Sanjay Beri took two more wickets in an over. Several unimpeded boundaries later reknown lobb bowler Macdonald-Barker had the number 5 batsman stumped by Tom Carmichael, exit Mr M Ababzadah. In his second over the late arriving Bill Johnson trapped Read lbw. Jesus were 108-5 and the innings may have folded on another day as Wilkinson swung wildly twice at Macdonald-Barker and miscued. He survived as the two catches were not accept by our novice Chinese fielder. Thereafter Wilkinson walked down the pitch and smacked M-B to all parts so 1-6 became 1-57 off 5 overs.
Wilkinson and Read put on 83 runs in 10 overs before Bill Johnson bowled Wilkinson for 106. The sixty year old batsman had swung merrily taking full advantage of the equally elderly fielders and often loose bowling. Jesus added a further 18 runs before declaring after 34 overs.A sporing declaration indeed!
After an excellent tea Sanjay Beri and Keith Juriansz opened for Nomads and Sanjay was soon flaying the ball to all parts such that when he was bowled by Wilson for 54. Nomads were already 63 off 8 overs. Thereafter the Nomads innings was more sedate as both numbers 3 and 4 batsman took their time to get their bearings. Brockton had a look at 7 balls before nudging a single and it was his 12th ball that was dispatched for his first boundary.Just as seemed to be on his was Ashwin Rattan had him caught by Wilkinson,96-2,17 overs.
Ashwin Rattan now settled into a good spell of accurate bowling so much so it Bill Johnson faced 12 balls before he nudged single and it was off his 18th that he found his first boundary.Meanwhile Keith Juriansz after a cautious start was playing more expansively so when johnson fell bowled on the charge Nomads were 168-3 off 32 overs with Keith on 65. Enter Chris Wilson with six overs to go and 42 required. Could 'no knees' Wilson give Keith enough of the strike. In the event the two scored 36 off 48 balls leaving us 6 short of victory. Nomads needed 7 off the last over. Rattan bowled it conceding but1 run with all the fielders back on the boundary and Wilson incapable of running a two. After failing to hit a boundary Keith took a single of the fourth ball. Wilson swished and missed the fifth and was lbw on the last ball of the match. Keith Juriansz finished on 89 not out(9 x 4s and 3 x 6s). Key Jesus bowler Ashwin Rattan finished with 2-25 off 10 overs quite the best bowling figures of the match.
After the match both sides repaired to a nearbye hostelry tp ponder on a delighful day's cricket but, in particular, to celebrate the Wilkinson's century while the Nomads skipper met an old acquaintance.
Geer took out a new bat for Bill. The excitement effected
Bill's concentration for he was out shortly afterwards
