On Friday Nomads posted a substantial total with a powerful century from Simon Barter including six 6s and fifty from Bob Cairns. In the event Nomads declaration may have been a little tardy as they had the Forty Club 8 wickets down by the close after 44 overs. Blumberg and Fisher each took three wickets

Nomads Slaughtered
On Saturday Several key Nomads were suffering from a serious night out in Benidorm and it was thus unfortunate that Nomads lost the toss and were inserted.Yesterday's centurion Barter was soon gone bowled Parkin but then two productive partnerships took the score to 136 by the 25th over. Nial Thorburn was then very well caught by Bacon playing an unnecessary aerial cover drive and then the next over he trapped Stanfield with a 'shooter'. The innings now faltered and but for a generous dose of wides from Scott Burchell Nomads total would have been even less. In the end 207 was an inadequate difficult totalto defend especially as Sporting Alfas had a strong batting line up.
Climent and Morgan batted carefully building a match winning partnership of 88 in 19 overs,Morgan being stumped by Stanfield off Blumberg. Several quick wickets after the break would have changed the nature of the match but in fact from then on Parkin and Climent accelerated scoring 80 runs off the last 10 overs being particularly harsh on Bob Cairns. David Climent completed a century, his first against Nomads(and Cricket World XI). Unfortunately John Rezko hurt his hand attempting a caught and bowled hit with some ferocity had his spell cut short but it would hardly have effected the result of the match which was as bad a defeat as Nomads have ever suffered overseas.! Nomads bowled six wides while Alfas bowled 30. So it wasn't the accuracy of the local bowling that did for Nomads batting...need I say more
It is perhaps an unfortunate co-incidence that so often the younger Nomads in general over indulge themselves on Friday night with the strongest opposition to play the next day. But then such is the nature of tours. Six of the local opposition have played for Nomads/CWXI over the years.Well played Alfas.

A Welcome victory
Nomads one victory of this visit was much assisted by the powerful late innings of Assed and the opening bowling spell of Naveed whom we acquired from the Intellectuals CC. These two substituted for Bob Cairns (resting,'nackered) and John Rezko injured. Barter regained his form before being run out and Nial Thorburn played some excellent cover drives to reach a fifty as well. As for the rest they barely raised 28 between them.
Naveed opened the bowling and took four early wickets but with a horrid suspect action which the skipper fielding at gulley 'and watching the bat' did not notice until Brian Pitts, umpire, brought it to his attention. He was removed from the attack. How this would have effected the game is difficult to assess as without Naveed we would have opened with Assad a much better and rather fast bowler. In the event Alfas made a late order recovery led by Wambeek who completed a well deserved fifty.
Alfas had opened their bowling with two young Spaniards and they bowled very well. Catala took three top order wickets including Vince Gavin and Jon Mordaunt for ducks.

Alfas Outplay Nomads
Simon Barter was scheduled to leave anyway but Richard Woolhouse decided that he should set off early and spend the day in Valencia which left us one short. John Rezko reported fit to bat (just) but P Packham had not recovered from his muscle pull on Friday. We had already recruited Raymond Jones and Scott Burchell. However on the day several players did not turn up and so we agreed to play a 9-a-side match.
On paper the batting line up should have been capable of 240 odd. Instead with the exception of a revived Bob Cairns who hit 76 no one really featured. A couple of shooters did not help the cause removing Thorburn and Jones and so Nomads with a mere 169 on the board were 7 wickets down and the last pair in. Luckily Blumberg and Rezko are not the worst last pair and these two added 40 so Nomads posted 209 at the end of 40 overs.
Again notwithstanding some class in the local batting line up an attack of Jones, Burchell, Cairns and Blumberg would have expected to win or at least make a match of it. On the day it was not like that. Climent and Boon, not without some luck, especially off the exasperated Raymond Jones put on an opening stand of 116 in 16 overs. O'Reilley's arrival at the wicket slowed things down for a while but the skipper rather foolishly dismissed him. Then Mordaunt (remember the duck for us the day before) joined Graham Howe and a swift 43 was added before Jones accounted for him. Howe then hit Blumberg for 15 off his last over and then despatched Jones for 10 to win the match but just fail to reach his fifty.
Nomads were slaughered but it was a lovely day and a match played in good humour.
Must do better next time.
