Nomads in Spain March 11-16th 2010 L'Alfas Del Pi

March 2010

MATCH 1  NOMADS CC  v Sporting Alfas Midweek XI March 12th 2010, 12.30pm, Woodbridge Oval Albir L'Alfas Del Pi Spain-40 overs each innings ,8 overs max per bowler

Kevin Smith & a hobbling President excel

depleted body of Nomads which included Helen Cooper were assisted by local Dave Riley and scored sufficient runs on a very cold day to present a stiff challenge for the mid week XI. Kevin Smith and Ranjit Latchman got the innings off to a sound start although struggling for a while with the lack of pace of the veteran opening attack. Ranjit made fifty while Smith reached a useful ninety one.

The opposition's reply was very dependent on the stroke play of Faran Afzal. His cameo was brought to an end by a superb catch in the deep by James While off Shameen Neebar and James took three top order batsmen out and the rest succumbed to the slows of Blumberg and guest Riley.    Kellington the opening bowler injured his knee and did not bat.

This useful outing was spoilt by the news that two of Zeeshan's youngsters and  Middlesex Colts had withdrawn the day before despite Zeeshan having bought their tickets! Ugh. Later that evening we learned that Abdul Satter was unable to join us so our proposed  Saturday side was now short three first team players and lame Blumberg or Helen Cooper would have to play unless we could persuade Simon Barter to play;

Nomads thrashed again on Saturday,  dropped catches don't he lp

It is normal procedure before a match for the captains to agree the format and for the local skipper to inform the visitors of any local rules. Otherwise matches are played to MCC Laws of Cricket. As a spate of wides were called off speedy Iffy Ahmed's bowling it quickly became apparent that MCC Laws on wides were not being applied. After consultation we were informed that Spanish League rules were being applied wherebye two additional lines drawn within the batting crease determined a wide. This was harsh on new boy Iffy whose natural line for in swing and off cutters was around this offside extra line and this seemed to disturb his concentration to say nothing of his enthusiasm. That aside the early dropping of Mark Spencer off Iffy  did not helped our cause either.

It started well down at the Woodbridge Oval, Laundon winning the toss and electing to bat first. Openers Spencer and Howe got off to a flyer, stroking the Nomads attack around the Oval with an ease that is the mark off true class. After giving the opening attack of While, Ahmed, Sialvi and Neebar a true battering and reaching 185 in 25 overs, Spencer(86) fell to a super catch by Shameen Neebar off the bowling of Prabhakar, who also got the scalp of Howe(112) giving While a easy catch when trying to push the score along.

Crompton scored at a mighty rate spanking 48 from 26 balls, before edging one to the keeper, at the other end Ur Rehman looked to be enjoying his comeback, striking 30 from 23, falling to the guile of Blumberg, well stumped by Smith. With only 5 overs left and 280 on the board Munoz(4) and Lupson(12) fell trying to push the score on. Special mention to keeper Smith who claimed 1 catch and 2 very good stumpings off Blumberg, who amazes all at the Woodbridge with his slow wicket taking deliveries.   Laundon(9) and Morgan(1) eased SACC to a remarkable 40 over score of 328-6.

Munoz took the new ball and was quick, bowling to a 9 and 1 offside field and cleaning up both openers, the figures of 2 for 32 really did not do him justice. Taylor using his immense knowledge returned 1 for 21 from his 8 overs. Lupson disappointed at not getting the new ball, charged in and gave a good account of himself returning 2 for 33 from 5. Ur Rehman showed that even after a winter off he is a class act, 4 for 20 from 6 overs ripped the middle order apart. Birthday boy Marshall was given the chance to show his normally well hidden bowling talent to the large crowd watching, which included his Grandparents, Mum and Dad, 1 ball 1 wicket game over.

Nomads best chance of a serious chase was for Skipper James While to blast a decent score but for some reason he chose to bat at 9.

This was one of the biggest defeats inflicted on Nomads in Spain. It was unfortunate that Nomads were three light of the planned eleven nevertheless we seriously underperformed.Well played Alfas!  Attempts to persuad Barter to play instead of Helen proved inadequate which was a shame in view of the 329 target.    Skipper Laundon was momentarily faced with a difficult dilema. Should he accept the catch from Helen Cooper's immaculate forward defensive shot and give young Harry Marshall a first ball wicket or close his eyes and let the lady survive. Kevin put cricket  first before chivalry and romance! Many thanks to Donna and Graham for the lovely spread after the game and we all hope Evan enjoyed his birthday. Nomads were remarkably well fed and watered thanks to the Howe birthday party-just the right way to celebrate an immaculate century.

Alfas Bowlers Treat Nomads Batsmen To Easy Runs

On the first sunny day of the season, SACC won the toss for the third week running and elected to bat again , with young Marshall leading from the front with a four off his first ball faced. Packhiam though was bemused by one that was straight missing it and being cleaned bowled. Munoz came to the crease and the two young lads proceeded to add 73 for the 2nd wicket with Harry Marshall scoring a very fluent 32 off 40balls.

SACC reached a very respectable 127-2 off first 20 and Afzal and Munoz carried on the fine work before we saw a very ugly situation on the field of play. The bowler being disgusted at a certain decision being turned down followed this with a few tasty words and was asked to leave the field of play and the ground.  This regretable outburst meant Nomads were now 10 in the field and were minus their number 3 batsmen! Blumberg took over his remaining over and next ball clean bowled Munoz for 77.  Pennick, Gomez-Brown, Mcinnes all came and went with only 41 runs being added for the last 10 and the fall of 7 wickets with Afzal scoring a comfortable 81 before giving his wicket away and the maybe the match, still Alfas 2nds reached a competitive 250-9 off 39.        Blumberg finished with 4-34 including Munoz and Afzal while Ramzan recorded a creditable 3-33.

Nomads started quietly at first against the senior attack of SACC before the openers were gifted a short ball an over. With wickets not coming a change of bowling was needed  which again proved the downfall of the home skipper as the short ball again was being used for some reason and Nomads reached 119 for no loss after 20 overs.

As Afzal came on he took a wicket off his first ball with a good catch by first slip to dismiss Smith for 63, but the runs just kept coming even though 8 an over was required. The bowlers duly obliged in giving away easy runs, before another wicket fell,Iffy Ahmed, off a bouncy ball from Mariner. This brought in new SACC member Jamshid(Jimmy) guesting for Nomads who smashed a very quick 50, and with overs 30-32-34 being bowled by three different bowlers going for 60 runs changed the game around completely and let Nomads reach 251 for the loss of just 3 wickets and 5 overs to spare.

A very ugly day for Alfaz bowling side again! So if anyone knows any cricketers who can bowl please let the Sunday skipper know, as a few could be going into early retirment.

Unobserved by the local scribe Simon Barter hit 94 not out, an innings which accelerated  considerably in the later stages but not sufficently to reach his ton as Jamshid struck merrily away at the other end.

Nomads fail to take final wicket

Simon Barter won the toss and batted. Iffy Ahmed  was injured so a reluctant Ranjit Latchman opened with Kamal Prabhakar and carelessly got out on 98. There were useful knocks from Vince and Shameen before the evergreen Jack Hyams in his ninety first year walked to the wickert. Sadly he failed to add to his 121,000 runs already recorded. Ramzan mixed caution with the occassional slog while his partners hit merrily. Jamshid Amir hit a whirlwind 44 and   his example was followed in more classical style by Zeeshan who finished on 35 not out when Simon declared on 40 overs with the score on 301. That he declared at such a total was a tribute to the perceived potential of Faran and Afzal and his friend Naveed(not exactly over 40!). A declaration game requires some discipline with respect to the interval duration. This was absent with the effect of shortening the available time to bowl out The Forty Club. Skipper Geoff Evans fell for a duck off Zeeshan which brought in Faran. He was equally harsh on Ramzan and Sialvi. Ramzan removed Norton only to bring in Naveed who with a good eye set about the bowling with gusto.

A brilliant leg side stumping removed Faran when he threatened a very big score while Naveed skied an inviting slow from Blumberg. This brought forth the cry “Will someonelse please catch this “..and Vince Gavin duly did.

It was now a matter of whether Nomads could prize out the remaining wickets in the overs left.  The inviting slows from Blumberg & Hyams failed to produce results but the the seam of Neebar and Jamshid blasted out  all but  the last wicket including the famously obdurate Bobby Nix.

In what may have been a masterstroke Simon brought on Vince for the final over but The Forty Club final pair were equal to the treat and the match was drawn.
