Nomads let match slip

Nomads drew an interesting match with Templars which arguably we should have won. Templars recovered from 22-3,and 111-6 at lunch to a large total by way of a ninth wicket stand of 102. Both batsmen should have been caught early on in the stand reports the blushing skipper who earlier took an astonishing catch which stunned his team mates into temporary disbelief and took Abdul to a four wicket haul for very little at that stage. Both our opening bowlers were late,one lost, the other delayed, so the innings began with gentle seam from Bill Johnson and subtle slows from Abdul. The eventual late introduction of debutant Autralian Chris Byrnes who bowled with great vigour and pace produced two more wickets before lunch,114-6. Lunch was to envigorate theTemplars who put on another 80 runs before Blumberg took two wickets,191-8. Nomads probably eased off at this point thinking about batting and still digesting the huge lunch. The toal by way of a very expensive last over was 295-8. The innings was underpinned by an excellent unbeaten century by Dinacory who should have been caught and bowled by Blumberg.

On paper Nomads had a very strong and long batting line up however this was tempered by the fact that Jeremy Lascelles arrived injured and unable to run and Bill Johnson played with a damaged hand which impaired his batting while Ranjit claimed he was knackered by the Northwood cricket week. Templars doubtless noting the success of Abdul at the start of their innings began with slow bowling. Nomads replied brightly before Abdul was adjudged lbw at 44. Johno Gordon and Paul Stanfield then put on another 70 runs well ahead of the asking rate with Johno hitting three 6s before he mishit a slowfull toss to deepmidon who took an unlikely tumbling catch which semed to surprise the rest of the Templars almost as much as were Nomads before lunch.

The loss of Johnowas to prove crucialfor although Stanners & Byrnsie maintained the rate once Stanners went the innings lost all momentum. We had had some 130 runs to score in 20 overs having scored about 165 in 26 overs.The innings having stalled nomads now hitboundaries and then got out mainly to the flighted filth of Kirchner who finished with 5-71.

Mark Oppe and Tony Harlow saw off the final overs without alarm despite the Templars skipper roaring in with great determination. So we settled for a draw after a fabulous day in a spectacular setting.
