Nomads secure remarkable victory after top order batting collapse
Quite some drama at Hedley Heath on afine summer's day! Brockers won the toss and batted first on what turned out to be a typical early season pudding of a pitch. Headley left arm swing seam Weller has taken a hatful of Nomads wickets over previous years but this time he was extra deadly taking out five Nomads and when Plant and blackburn fell to tall seamer Simmons Nomads were reduced to 26-7.
The innings was rescued by the tail with stand of 63 betweena steady David Steele and a swashbuckling Ronnie Patel. When Patel fell at 89 the last two wickets added a useful 24 more runs and number 11 Blumberg spoilt Weller's analysis with an offside driven boundary. Nomads were all out 114 in 32.4 overs yet tea was ready and enjoyed.
After a splendid tea Headly had avery long time to chase a mere 114 and indeed very slowly the openers with alot of plying and missing reached 28 before the partnership was broken.thereafter wickets fell streadily to the bustling pace of debutant robbie Blackburn and skillfull seam of Sajjad Shawl so that Headly innings hung in the balance at 51-6. Waller came in and immediately took a liking to Tom Brockton's bowling who had replaced a tiring Blackburn. He hit a quickfire 23 and looked to be capable of securing a win for Headley but Andy Smith baffled him and he was bowled. Shawl replaced Brockton and Blackburn Smith and the last two wickets fell leaving Headley 16 short of victory and Robbie Blackburn with a well earned fifer on debut.
So Nomads had pulled off a remarkable win against the odds and celebrated with a good few ales with the hospitable opposition as the sun sank down over this this attractive cricket ground with some eccentric local rules.
