Chingford ignore the mysteries of Pagie to draw comfortably

Nomads are yet to beat Chingford after five visits. With no 1st or 2nd XI players available as Chingford were involved in a County Cup T20 competition elsewhere this should have been an excellent opportunity to put the record straight. In the event the Chingford mix of veteran and youngsters from the 3rds and beyond did well to draw thanks to a maiden fifty from number 7 Russ Simmons and a whirlwind fifty at the start of the innings from veteran Jam Akhtar.

Nomads won the toss and batted first. Victor Kandampully and Tom Brockton looked to fill their pockets against a mediocre bowling attack. Vic missed out when on 21 he mishit Hassan to be well caught by Jam Akhtar. so at 63 debutant Richard Fleming joined Brockers and these two added 161 before Tom uncharacteristicaly retired on completing a century. Chingford early on had posted a very defensive field with many on the boundary, in response to this Brockton ran like hell and Fleming hit sixes and threatened to overtake Brockers. Fleming was eventually out aiming to hit the ball out of the ground giving Paul Trego the first of two wickets, the second being Harry Kandampully. Nomads declared at 223 off 44 overs. Richard Fleming had played a fine innings on debut.

Jam Akhter set about Nomads bowlers with relish hitting 51 out of the opening partnership of 52 to which Carder contributed a 16 ball duck. Jam attacked both Sajjad and Pagie oblivious of changes of pace. The  innings came to an abrupt halt as three wickets fell including Jam, 60-3 off 9 overs. Hasan and Rangwala had a small stand of 25 wherepon three wickets fell,93-6. Simmons and Prestcoll then added 46 as Nomads skipper rung the changes with his bowlers. Eventually Tom Marshall bowled Prestcoll for 23,135-7 but number 8 James blocked while Simmons swung merrily so that despite the late recall of Shawl the innings closed at 164-7 off 46 overs with young Russ Simmons having hit his first club fifty, match drawn.

After two five wicket hauls Pagie finished wicket less, the Marshalls five between them and Sajjad took two.

Once again Nomads had been lucky to avoid the thunderstorms and cloud bursts characteristic of this holiday weekend. Nevertheless for birthday boy Victor there were few runs to shout about despite family support.
