  Sajjad Blast not enough

Nomads travelled to Essex premier division side Chingford for the usual Bank Holiday Monday fixture and despite looming black clouds and an increasingly poor forecast amazingly managed to get a full game in.

Unsurprisingly Chingford batted first, their side made up of mainly 1st XI and 2nd XI league cricketers, all under the age of 30, plus old stager Mike Blake who opened the innings. Nomads on the other hand were a bit of a mixed bunch but the opening salvo was pretty evenly matched with Sajjad Shawl and Mike Plant bowling impressively in the opening overs. Plant was rewarded with a couple of wickets in an accurate opening spell, but Shawl was unusually expensive and unlucky, opener McGregor being dropped at slip.

The wicket looked like an absolute belter and Brockton turned to David Steel and Charles Fellows-Smith to take pace off the ball. Both adapted to conditions well, with Fellows-Smith in-particluar bowling an immaculate length, fully deserving his figures of 3-35 from 9 accurate overs. Youngster McGregor scored a classy half century, but he was put down at 2nd slip by Steele. Debutant and Hertfordshire veteran cricket Tony McDonald-Barker was put to the sword in the closing overs, Chingford declaring on 231-6 from 41 overs.

After an impressive tea Steve Dummer and Northwood man Nigel Hussey opened the innings for the Nomads, and the score realised 31 in good time (mainly due to some wayward bowling from the chirpy giant West Indian Green). However Hussey was dismissed by a stunning catch at cover and Dummer victim of the umpires finger. Ormiston and Plant were then bowled neck and crop by Baldock (4-21 from 7 overs). Nomads had gone from 31-0 to 42-4 in 4 overs!

Brockton and Peerless began to re-build the innings with a partnership of 65 that got the side up and over the hundred mark, but as the 20 overs started Nomads needed 7 an over and in the face of some impressive fielding runs (and more importantly boundaries) were tricky to come by. Brockton perished for 39 hitting a full delivery straight back at McGregor (snr) who pouched the catch. Nomads were now 107-5 but this wicket brought mighty hitter Sajjad Shawl to the crease, promoted up the order, with new bat in hand and he certainly made the most of the opportunity clubbing 55 with 4 massive 6’s.

However, Sajjad’s aggression was not without a price, as both Peerless (39) and Steele were both run out in the attempt of quick runs. Shawl was eventually caught on the deep mid-wicket boundary eyeing up another maximum and it was left to Ronnie Patel and Charles Fellow-Smith to bat out the remaining overs. Nomads closing on a very respectable 188-8 from 40 overs, with a draw being the result.

Our thanks to Chingford for staying out in the drizzle and for a very enjoyable and game at their fine ground on the periphery of Greater London East, a stone's throw from Essex.
