Runfest at Barnes but Nomads rue dropped catches

 Nathan Lamb at the crease

Nomads travelled to Lonsdale Road on bank holiday Mondayboasting a very strong XI and a powerhouse of a batting line up to play Barnes CC. Finally a sunny and warm day to play cricket, the wicket looked a belter and as usual the Barnes outfield wasto be lightning quick. Winning the toss and batting first Nomads got off to a sterling start thanks to openers Phil Bell and Jeremy Lascelles who forged an opening partnership of just under a hundred in 19 overs. When Lascelles (38) departed Winchmore Hill cricketer Del Terblanche kept up the good rate of scoring with some robust strokes and and a mighty 6 off the bowing of Alex Fouldes that ended up in the garden of a children's party 4 doors down from the ground.

Barnes did pull things back with the wickets of Bell who had just reached a deserved half century and Johnno Gordon who sliced a square drive off Hake into the bucket hands of Barnes overseas pro John Olive at backward point. Will Vincent soon also departedbut Terblanche and Nathan Lamb then looked to up the scoring rate putting on a handy partnership in the middle of the innings. Terblanche (70) was unlucky to find the hands of the lone fielder on the legside boundary with a well struck pull shot off a rank long hop and after Lamb was dismissed Rupert Style illustrated there was more to his game than a gritty opening bat with a cameo innings including a mighty six into the groundsman's hut off the bowling of Olive.

Sajjad Shawl (31 not out) and Stu Reeve offered some late innings acceleration and Shawl slapped the final ball of the 45 overs to the cover boundary but not before he had slammed the ball into his ankle. Barnes would need 302 to win from their 45 overs. After the sumptuous Barnes DIY tea Gordon and Shawl took the new cherry for Nomads and Gordon was immediately rewarded clean bowling the Barnes 1st XI opening bat for a 3rd ball duck. Unfortunately this brought John Olive to the crease and although keeper Vincent dropped a flying chance behind the sticks off the bowling of Shawl, Olive was quickly into his stride launching skipper Brockton out of the ground for a mammoth maximum. Brockton had replaced Shawl who gradually succumbed to his ankle blow , hobbling his last few balls and for the rest of the game. Olive (74) was well taken by Shawl off the bowling of Terblanche and the safe hands of Rupert Style accounted for the Barnes no5 off the bowling of Brockton.

The demise of Sajjad Shawl and the absence of a wicket keeper meant out fifth seamer Will Vincent was wicket keeping so we were a mainstream bowler short so Charles Peerless who had a good record bowling slow last year was introduced and produced an unfortunately expensive spell which offered Barnes the chance to get back into the ascendancy and with Jarrod Smith smiting the ball to all parts the Nomads fielding lost its discipline.

The hobbling Shawl dropped a simple chance at mid-on off the luckless Terblanche and Barnes edged nearer to their improbable target. Nomads needed a tight spell from Stu Reeve. He beat the bat frequently and induced many dot balls but sadly he kept bowling one full toss an over which received savage treatment from Schmidt and Chambers.

Barnes romped home with a little over three overs to spare, their no 4 unbeaten on a well deserved, if slightly fortuitous century. 600 runs in the day, that's a bit more like it and we drank long into the evening in celebration of such a runfest.
