Three fifties and a Sixfer help Nomads to close win

Driving from London the prospects of any play seemed remote. However as we neared Oxford the clouds parted and indeed despite a shower at tea and some drizzle and a cold wind Nomads and Buxton Strugglers enjoyed a good game of fluctuating fortune.

Nomads won the toss and batted and were soon sans openers,11-2. Jonathan Sebanja and Joe Ireland then revived the innings with a stand of 121 before Sebanja attempted an unecessarily extravagant shot and was caught for a robust 79 off smith.Ireland completed a fine fifty whereupon he took miscued and was also caught off Smith,150-3. With Sebanja and Irekland at the crease nomads seemed to be heading for a big total. However with these two gone, wickets fell steadily.Thankfully Khan remained and completed a well struck fifty by the close. In Page and Blumberg he found two partners producing 17 runs for both the 9th and 10th unbeaten and this elevated the final score to a decent 227.

After a good tea Marsden and Forder in particular put on 82 quickly against the seam of Sebanja and spin of Ireland. however the introduction of Chris Page and his flighted slows changed the game. First he had Forder stumped, then he caught Marsden off Sebanja. he then caught and bowled two batsmen and bowled another two and Ormiston caught another giving Page a sixfer and reducing Strugglers to 128-7.

Strugglers now counter attacked. Saif Khan ran out Budd,151-8. Strugglers were unlucky to lose Smith retired hurt with a knee injury as he and Fruhwien looked likely to take Strugglers to victory and Nomads 5th and 6th bowlers had proved expensive. Two tight overs from the returning Ireland couple with a similar one from Ormiston helped our cause, 3 overs 6 runs! Lashwayo and Sebanja swapped wicket keeping duties and with his fifth ball Lashwayo had Burgess stumped Sebanja. Nomads had won by 23 runs with 13 balls to go.

Buxton Strugglers indulged in an amusing tour fines meeting upstairs afterwards but had to dash off back to Derbyshire despite Nomads attempts to persuade them to delay their departure. As a result Nomads alone repaired to the Dewdrop Pub Summertown to celebrate victory where we were joined by Mrs Latchman who had spent the day in Oxford.
