Deluge scuppers Nomads chase

Nomads played out an interesting fixture at the impressive venue of Beckenham Cricket Club on Friday as part of their annual cricket week.  Skipper for the day Vic Kandampully had one important job to do, win the toss and bat. He failed and Nomads were asked to field by the popular Beckenham skipper Adrian “Tommo” Thomas.  The wicket was rock hard, the outfield parched and unbelievably quick, a run fest we thought in 32 degrees.

Beckenham started cautiously, Michael & Coulson (amusingly known as Curtly by all the Beckenham members) looking to build a solid foundation for the home side. Young Ickenham cricketer James Hamilton bowled impressively but without reward in the opening salvo.  It was incredibly hot and humid, but with potential thunderstorms forecast during the latter part of the day. Drinks breaks were every 10 overs and a delicious curry lunch awaited the players after the morning session.

Beckenham were in the ascendancy after 30 overs when lunch was taken. 126-1 a fair reflection of the wicket, but also the fact the Nomads had fielded well and stuck to their task.  Young players Hamilton, Ujoodia, Manku & Walker all fielding brilliantly to save the visitors at least 25-30 runs in the field with diving stops.

After a long and enjoyable lunch the home sides grasp on the game began to slip, Michael, who had been so impressive in the morning session seemed to become more tentative the closer he got to three figures and accurate spells from Hamilton, Butcher & Andy Marshall (the latter both taking a deserved 3 wickets), meant the rate slid from over 5 an over at one point to just 4 when the declaration game.  Michael had reached a deserved hundred before falling to Ben Butcher, although his anchor role had resulted in Beckenham posting an under-par total.  Ben Butcher the pick of the Nomads bowlers, bowling with considerable skill and changes in pace. David MacVicor was the only Nomads bowler whose figures were anything less than respectable.

The home side declaring after 54 overs on 224-7. Nomads would have in the region of 45 overs to chase this total.  Taking into consideration the scores from the previous day’s cricket were both sides scoring in excess of 300 a score of 224 was well under par to the tune of 70 – 80 runs according to Tommo.

Brockton and Blackheath cricketer Sohail Ujoodia opened the innings for the Nomads, and quickly started to put the home sides total into perspective racing to 70-0 before Ujoodia was caught and bowled by Roberts for 33.  Brockton had raced long and was unbeaten on 36, playing some pleasing drives and cuts when he was joined by Manku. Alas, Manku’s arrival signalled the heavens to open and no further play was possible.  Hail stones, thunder, lightning and heavy torrential rain engulfed the ground and play was officially called off at 6:15pm.  Nomads were 76-1 a ball shy of the 11th over needing another 148 with 9 wickets in hand from approx 35 overs.

We thank Tommo, and his Blackheath side for their hospitality on and off the field as well as Nick Stevenson for braving the heat and umpiring.  President Michael Blumberg was an interested spectator, and Charles Fellows-Smith joined the side for an ale or two. News also reached the Nomads that Chris “The Professor” Page was playing 2 miles down the road for the Paralytics at Addiscombe, the rain ruined his day, “Did not bowl”.

A special mention to Gethin Roberts, who kindly kept wicket for the Nomads in the morning session while Kyle Bradley was negotiating his exit from the brig at Brize Norton military compound.  The Kent junior looked a class act and also added some impetus to the Beckenham innings late in the piece, reverse sweeping Ben Butcher on two occasions (not sure any of us have seen Butch reverse swept before!).  A young cricketer of serious talent and great promise.

Two skippers - Adrian 'Tommo' Thomas and Victor Kandampully
