Nomads contrive to lose in tight contest in Kent

Nomads made the annual trip to Beckenham CC, who we now play on the Friday of their cricket week each year, and despite some heavy rain in the morning afull-ish game of cricket was played under largely grey skies. Due to the persistent morning drizzle lunch was taken early (another fabulous curry from chef Julian –thanks Jules!) and the sides assembled for a 35 over game starting at 1:45pm.

Nomads skipper for the day Vic Kandampully lost the toss and David MacVicar of Beckenham CC (and occasionally Nomads) elected to bat. Despite the rain the wicket looked a decent one and the outfield had drained sufficiently to mean no bar towels were needed todry the cherry.  Youth was the order ofthe day for the Nomads with the new nut and Hamilton (18) and Harry Ledger (19) tore in with the new ball, but with no reward for their hard graft. Indeed, it was not until the introduction of Hasan Khokar that Nomads started to chiptheir way through the batting order. Piller (ct and bld) and Barnett, brilliantly caught at 1st slip by a diving Dummer meant that the home side were two down. However, despite Ledger being rewarded with a wicket, this meant that the burly figure of Will MacVicar strode into bat.

Having scored a double ton in the Kent Premier division already this season as well as playing a few games for Kent 2nd XI MacVicar is clearly a talented cricket and he proved this by getting off the mark with a massive 6 over mid-wicket. However, Nomads continued to work hard and restricted MacVicar to 1 or 2 balls an over. This paid off, and pick of the bowlers Andy Marshall clean bowled him for 60 as he looked to sweep aggressively.

Some late fireworks from LeBosquet, who had been summoned to play as “strange boy” Oli Barnes had turned up, but then mysteriously left, got the home side to some score of parity, 184 from 35 overs.  Vichad taken 3 good catches to aid the Nomads in restricting Beckenham to this score, intelligently rotating his bowlers as well as getting Joshi into the game as he burgled two wickets with his liquorice all-sorts.

A quick turn-around meant that Nomads were back on the field and club skipper Brockton opened with former Afghanistan international Ahmed Elech.  MacVicar took the new ball and quickly had it flying around the Nomads players noses. Helmetless Brockton looked to stay, where possible, at the non strikersend but did clip MacVicar for 4 through midwicket early in the piece. The pair added 52 in 10 overs, showcased by a couple of gorgeous drives from Elech, before was taken at mid-off, and although Aussie Tom Balkwill and Brockton added a further 41 in good time both were dismissed whenlooking well set. Nomads now 109-3, but with loads of batting left and only 75 needed from the final 15 overs there was no need for panic, or so we thought.

A good spell from Bilimora, returning to Beckenham after a nasty hamstring tear at the start of the season did not assist the Nomads run chase but Ledger (34)and Kandampully were getting the Nomads close to the point of victory when both were dismissed. With overs running out Khokar opted to look for boundaries instead of rotating the strike and this was to be the Nomads downfall as ball after ball was swung at, and then missed completely. Dummer was not given much of the strike and his young cohort needed 9 off the final over to be bowled by leggie Edie. Three balls gone and not a run scored, then a swipe for 4, and then a single, meaning Dummer needed 4 off the last ball for victory and 3 for a tie. A strong shot down the ground from the former Bromley cricketer, but alas he was run out coming back for the 3rd and Nomads ending 1 run short.

How we managed to lose this match is beyond this author. However, disappointment was short lived as captain for the day Vic Kandampully generously supplied a bar tab after the contest, which most of theNomads eagerly tucked into!

Our thanks to Adrian “Tommo” Thompson, yet again for some super hospitality at Beckenham CC, a fixture that is quickly becoming one of the most popular in the Nomads calendar. Next year we hope to be blessed with warm sunshine and not grey cloud.
