Steve Dummer century can't save Nomads from defeat

Nomads were defeated by a young and athletic Beckenham side as their cricket week drew to a close on Friday. Brockton won the toss on a gorgeous summers morning and had no hesitation in batting first, the wicket looked to be an absolute cracker and the recent good weather meant a fast outfield, plenty of runs on offer we thought!

The Beckenham skipper tried his best to get the Nomads players "loose" before the start of the game, moved to closer to11:45am to accommodate an extra drink, with a few beers & jug of Pimms but Dummer & Blake batted with confidence in the morning session and at lunch Nomads were well placed at 87-0 from 27 overs. After a sumptious curry (yes curry!) for lunch washed down with a couple of cold San Miguel's Mike Blake was dismissed trying to up the rate. Dummer was now passed 50 and looking fluent, the ex Bromley 1st XI cricketer looking a class act. David Williamsand Kie Farrell were dismissed cheaply, both victim of superb catches. Farrel in particular was taken by talented keeper LeBosquet in front of 1st slip, possibly the catch of the season thus far.

Nomads were now 141-3 but Brockton joined Dummer and the pair forged a partnerrship of 96 with Dummer reaching his maiden Nomads hundred and Brockton to a quick-fire 50 off just 54 balls. Dummer upped the rate with succesive boundaries off the returning Maguire and he was eventually dismissed just before the declaration for a high class 131 from 164 balls. Dom Ramjag joined Brockton and the pair walked in with Nomads nicely placed at 252-4 from 53 overs. Nomads would bowl somewhere in the region of 48 overs back at the home side. However, Nomads did not get off to the ideal start with opener Evans being snaffled at first slip off the first ball of the innings from Joe Ireland.

The batsman was unmoved, claiming he did not hit the ball and the Beckenham panel umpire gave him not out!Clearly bouyant by this obvious let off the Beckenham crickter then launched a savage attack on Beckenham and Nomads member David MacVicor smashing him all round the ground to reach a robust 50 from just 38 balls. MacVicor pulled out of the attack after going for 39 in 5 overs. Ireland got Nomads back in the game with two quick wickets, including Evans, givenoutLBW,but Irelandwas more expensive than usual going for 72 in 14 overs, and although the ever-green leg-spinner Stan Wooliscroft pouched a caught and bowled to dismiss McCollough just shy of his 50 the home side were rocketing along at over 6 an over clearly taking advantage of some of the "elder statemen" in the field for the Nomads.

Brockton took two scalps in his first two overs to give Nomads a sniff off knocking over the home side but LeBosquet took an extravagent liking to the slow bowling of Tony McDonald-Barker and thrashed him for 28 in 2 overs. Despite the best efforts of Raymond Lashwayo the home side cruised to victory with 5 wickets in hand and a full 10 overs remaining. LeBosquet had crunched 61 off 28 balls, a fine aggressive innings to get his side comfortably over the line.

With an earlier than expected finish and most of the Nomads not driving to Beckenham an enjoyableevening was enjoyed by the side. Charles Fellows-Smith joined the clan later on enjoying the micro-brewery ale that was on offer. Our thanks to "Tommo" the Beckenham skipper for making us so welcome at the ground. We look forward to next seasons encounter and hope for similar lovely weather.
