Nomads underperform at Mayow Park

Nomads suffered a plethora of drop outs as the team kept changing right up to Friday morning and this unfortunately decimated our top order batting. Caribbean Mix arrived with fifteen players so we  gratefully accepted three and played the match as 12 a side 11 batting and fielding.

Nigel Shaw won the toss for the Caribbean club and elected to bat. Nomads opening bowlers Saikat Barua and Richard Clark has early success.Saikat removed Hunt for a duck and Richard Clarke had Umir caught behind,8-2. These two bowled well and deserved more wickets but Arord attacked powerfully though his partner Cummins fell to Clarke well taken by Manderson standing up 38-3. London West Indies had made slow progress against the opening bowlers reaching 30 runs off 10 overs but when a creaky Page replaced Barua mayhem erupted as  Arord and Umir struck a series of boundaries one or two of which should have been caught. Eventually Arord miscued and this time Raymond Lashwayo took a good catch running in from long on, 63-4 off 15 overs.

The innings' momentum had changed and Umar and Scott smote a succession of Nomads bowlers to the boundary. Page had gone for 10 an over to be replaced by Andy Collins who started promisingly with a maiden over but was then hit for 24 off the next three. Ashwin Rattan who replaced Clarke was a little less expensive 49 off 8 in two spells but with the wicket of Hussan stumped. Raymond Lashwayo replaced Collins only to suffer 39 runs off 5 overs. However he did have a success bowling the London Windies' centurion. The early return of Saikat Barua for two overs failed to remove Umar or Scott. London Windies 85-4 at 20 overs had reached 247 off 40,an innings of two halves. What a contrast to their cousins playing India who had collapsed losing 6 wickets for 14 runs when well placed. We had an Ashwin in our side there the similarity ended.

After tea taken in the clubhouse of the now defunct Bowling club Nomads opened their batting with Andy Collins and Theo Collyer. Collins was first to fall playing over the top of a pitched up delivery from Cummins and Theo Collyer fell soon after also bowled Cummins. One run later Raymond Lashwayo who had top scored for Nomads in 2014 with 60 was out caught for a duck by a lifting short ball, again from Cummins. Meanwhile Alan Manderson was looking comfortable hitting a couple of well struck boundaries when he had a rush of blood and was bowled by a flighted delivery from Umir who had replaced Cummins. Nomads were now a paltry 28-4. Saikat Barua was joined by Darwin and 23 runs were added mainly contributed by a load of byes and wides when Darwin was clean bowled by Hussan who replaced the accurate Shaw. Nomads then lost five wickets for 5 runs including Saikat, caught & bowled. George Clarke promoted to 10 hit three runs but his experienced brother Richard mistimed an off drive only to be caught at mid off by Nigel Shaw. Nomads were thus all out 65, top scorer Mr Extras with 31. What a debacle!

Nevertheless we cheered up Jimmy Ferguson in the pub afterwards and Martin Couch thanked us for bringing a team. Next year we must do better. This match is played in memory of the much loved and admired Cricketer and Cricket Coach Tony Leslie. We won the match and took the huge Cup for a year in 2013. Let's do that again in 2017.
