Vic Kandampully unbeaten ton secures victory
The Nomads received a warm welcome in Oxted, a leafy Surrey commuter town overlooked by the North Downs. The late summer heat and humidity prompted Oxted to bat first after wining the toss. A flat dry wicket and fast outfield always favoured batting, and after a slow start the Oxted openers began to punish anything slightly offline or not of a perfect length. Kapadia proved to be the most economical of the Nomads bowlers, although the wickets fell to Butcher early and Page late. The Nomads put in a respectable fielding performance despite the heat, with Dickens keeping tidily and Kandampully galloping enthusiastically around the boundary in the ’sweeper’ role. Two of the older Nomads also managed to stay alert enough to take the catches that came their way.
Oxted made a sporting declaration on 226 after batting for less than 40 overs, trusting that their predominantly spin attack would deliver the win. Kandampully and Brockton began Nomads' reply cautiously. The incipient tedium was relieved by the skipper’s exquisitely timed square drive to the shortest boundary, which elicited praise from even his hardest to please teammates. Kandampully had already begun to dominate the bowling by the time Brockton fell to Thompson’s faster ball, his booming drives interspersed with equally deadly swats backward of square. Four further batting partners came and went in quick succession, with only Beri threatening before unexpectedly lobbing a simple chance to a grateful fielder. Wahi was unluckily run out. It was left to Morris to assist Kandampully in bringing the win within reach, swinging lustily at everything hittable and scampering eagerly to take every chance of a run. When Morris' swashbuckling performance came to its inevitable conclusion, it was left to Kandampully to hit the winning runs to complete a truly commanding innings.
Our generous hosts joined us for several beers after the game, during which time one Nomad claimed to see the shapes of animals in the trees fringing the ground while his teammates debated the possible functions of a distant building. 'It looks like a pub to me', said Chris Page.
