Nomads chase down 200 thanks to magnificent Huzefa century.

Overnight rain did not dampen Nomads’ visit to Oxted & Limpsfield’s pretty ground in the lovely setting of Master Park. Despite some moisture leaking underneath the covers at one end, we were told that the ground tended to be good for batting, and, indeed, Oxted & Limpsfield chose to bat on winning the toss.

Despite this display of confidence, Sajjad Shawl struck immediately, bowling a heavy length down the hill to have Heaver well held at gully from the third ball of the match. He continued to bowl with characteristic accuracy and pace to pick up fellow opener Wardley caught at cover by Thanawall. However, Oxted rode their luck thoughout the opening spell, and Ash Arora’s chinamen were introduced from the bottom end. Ash immediately found sharp turn and produced difficulties for Oxted’s middle order. This culminated in a skier hit out to the mid-wicket boundary  by Kourea, where Tanmay Thanawall took a steepling catch with striking confidence.

Tanmay was soon into the action himself, bowling Ejje with a low full-toss, and at 68/4 from 25 overs, Oxted looked to be in some difficulties. However, the father and son duo of Isaac and Greg Miller took the attack to the twirlers, knocking them off their length with a variety of sweeps. Greg Miller’s deft paddle-sweeps were well contrasted with his son’s orthodox hard sweeps and drives, and in the face of this variety, Adit Kothari and Richard Calver’s spin proved expensive. Some shrewd field-placing accounted for Miller Jr, caught at leg-gully attempting yet another sweep, but Greg Miller’s 64* guided Oxted to a total of 202/6 from 45 overs.

This very fair declaration meant that Nomads would have around 40 overs to chase, and after a fantastic tea, Kandampully and Adikari opened up for the Nomads. Adikari immediately showed his colours, slog-sweeping the second ball of the innings for a one-bounce four, and racing to 20 with a mighty six over mid-wicket. However, Adamson’s alternation of left arm swing and spin elicited one shot too many from the Linden Park man, and the resulting skier was both completely misjudged and brilliantly taken by Isaac Miller at cover.

However, this brought Huzefa Sajawal to the crease. After a couple of deceptively sedate overs, Huzefa knocked Isaac Miller out of the attack with a big six. With Kandampully also getting in on the action, Nomads had fairly raced to 63/1 off only 8 overs. Realising that the game was there for the taking, Nomads chose to consolidate for a few overs, picking up the runs on offer but running minimal risks until Kandampully paddle-swept off-spinner Will Heaver for three to bring up the hundred.

This brought Huzefa’s attacking instincts to the fore. Crashing two more boundaries off Adamson, he proceeded to lay into second-change spinner Nick Emmins, taking a maximum off his first ball to bring up a well-deserved fifty just before the start of the 20 overs.

At the other end, Heaver had found his length and repeatedly beat Kandampully outside off-stump. However, Vic returned from the drinks interval to reach his own fifty immediately thereafter. Nomads now needed only 70 from 20 overs, and with Kandampully rotating the strike and Huzefa finding the rope regularly, victory looked assured.

The loss of Vic Kandampully (55) to a catch in the deep when the score was 160 did not affect the momentum. Huzefa hit the next four balls for six, four, four and four. That’s the way to do it!

With Tanmay Thanawall (7*) keeping Huzefa company, Nomads were coasting home. The introduction of Oxted’s own left-arm wrist spinner proved costly, as Huzefa took advantage of a loose delivery to bring up his hundred with his fourth six of the innings, before carting Heaver (0-44) down the ground to complete a notable victory by 8 wickets.

Huzefa had made 113 not out, reaching both his 50 and his 100 with sixes, without giving a chance. A very impressive knock indeed.

Nomads had chased 202 in only 29.1 overs and celebrated the fact in the Oxted & Limpsfield bar over several jugs of beer. To accompany, there were hot Hog Roast baps kindly provided and prepared by Oxted’s Simon Wardley, to great acclaim. Oxted & Limpsfield were excellent hosts throughout: thank you! We certainly look forward to next season’s fixture
