Veteran Spinners take Nomads to victory

On a beautiful sunny day with barely a hint of cloud all day Nomads skipper won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that resembled the Caribbean rather than London Essex. Jeremy Lascelles and Sanjay Beri opened for Nomads and soon had the score rattling along indeed Jeremy abandoning his charesristic technique hit Ilija Krunic back over his head in the very first over. The opening stand produced 86 and the second some 29 before the flashing blade of Sanjay came to an end lbw to a not a very good shot for a swift 66. Fourteen runs later JT hit his wicket, 129-3. Shiraz who was motoring along with ease walked out of his crease to clobber a high full toss, miscued and was caught by the bowler, 151-4. Joe O'Gorman now joined debutant Jeff Higgs and made merry with the flagging bowling adding a hundred runs at good pace.Jeff was out stumped short of his fifty and shortly after Joe attempting a six over long on was well caught by Romeez.A few boundaries from Keith Alexander and a six from the 'Pope' and Nomads declared with 274 on the board off 36.3 overs thus allowing themselves a potential 47 overs to bowl out Old Vics.

After Tea Nomads' one seamer began together with off spinner Ben Butcher. Ben was so excited with the bounce and turn he was achieving on a very awkward pitch that he forgot his normal impeccable line and length  testing Nomads keeper  to exasperation. Andy Gregory bowled Mike Blake with a rather good ball that swung from leg to off stump but it was the introduction of veteran left arm spinner Paul Fielding that started the Old Vics' collapse bowling Old Vics Wicket Keeper, 75-2.  Next over Ben finally had a wicket as Nawaz Cader miscued and Jeff Higgs running from leg slip took the catch.

Romeez and Hogan added 30 runs before Andy Marshall who had replaced Ben bowled the dangerous Romeez. At the same score 105 Fielding bowled Hogan. Then at 109 four more wickets fell including Old Vics skipper former Nomad Ilija Krunic for a duck. Number 11 Jennings now joined David Turner and these two added ten more runs as the overs ticked away and the sun sunk ever lower behind Long On. Eventually Andy Marshall trapped Jennings on the back foot in front with a low bouncer and Nomads had won by 155 runs with eight overs to go. Marshall and Fielding finished with 4 wickets each. Undoubltedy Nomads had had the better of a virtually grassless pitch with increasingly erratic bounce.

After the match many Nomads and Old Vics lingered long on a magnificent evening consuming much beer and doubtless engaged in uplifting conversation.
