Harry Elbrow's ton lays foundation of Nomads win

A depleted Nomads side defeated a young Plaxtol side by 1 wicket when with the scores level Mark Oppe hit the first ball of Munton's 13th over for four. The victory was built upon a fine debut century from teenager Harry Elbrow, quite the best innings ever from Richard Fanthorpe and useful knocks from Andy Smith and Steve Marians.Victory came in the 41st over with 4.5 overs still to come indicative of the generous declaration by Mark Taylorson who succumbed to his team mates rampant hunger for the excellent lunch waiting to be devoured. Sadly the Plaxtol chairman's usuall crate of red wine was missing so Nomads batsmen tackled their task in complete sobriety which was probably a good thing as the opening pair only just  passed thirty years between them.

Nomads were missing their opening attack of Nic Cowley and Kamal Prabharkar so young Sam Eccles bounded in from one end while Andy Smith bowled slow and cunning at the other. Williams fell early to Smith but Cork and Cartwright set about the bowling with relish and built up a huge stand despite the introduction of Blumberg, Elbrow and Lowe.

There was a missed stumping but when Harry Elbrow bowled Cork these two had added added 150. When Blumberg bowled Richie Cartwright also retired on 102 and soon after the innings was declared.

From the first over youngsters Elbrow and Eccles attacked the Plaxtol bowling putting on a swift 38 before Eccles was caught and bowled. Lowe hit several boundaries before playing on to Thompson,74-2. Elbow then had two productive partnerships with the veteran Steve Marions(81) and then Richard Fanthorpe(51) before mishitting a full toss to Munton. Elbrow had hit 115 with two 6s and nineteen 4s. Fanthorpe fell at 222-5 leaving Andy Smith and skipper Charlton Lamb to knock off the remaing runs. This they nearly did but not quite so and as a result it was Oppe and Blumberg the final pair, who took Nomads to victory.

A good number of both teams then enjoyed Harveys Sussex bitter at the local hostelry though one member ventured indoors to watch the first half of a FIFA soccer match on TV. and will be fined shortly!
