Nomads batting fails the challenge

Nomads suffered another defeat at the hands of Maidenhead & Bray, losing by some 60 runs in an entertaining encounter played under blue and sunny skies in the gorgeous setting of Maidenhead. The home skipper won the toss and unsurprisingly opted to bat first, with Nomads tormentor in chief (minor counties cricketer Quereshi) in the XI.

Manos Roy & Rohan Ghosh opened with the new cherry and although runs flowed at a pace Roy did induce the M&B opener into a drive which was well snaffled by the bucket hands of Andy Collins at first slip. David Steele (1-35 off 8) and Collins (2-16 off 8) bowled exceptionally well in tandem and restricted the classy Quereshi to occasional boundaries. He had got into the 30’s when Collins struck twice in quick succession to clean bowl both him and the diminutive opener who had got bogged down with he accuracy of Steele & Collins.

Fahad Raja and Charlie Peerless were impressive in the covers and the M&B innings began to lose momentum. After Collins had completed his spell the slog was clearly on, and with wickets in hand M&B looked to accelerate. Gautom Menon bowled his off-spin and Tom Brockton his in-swingers but with the field out and several players who could not throw as well as they once could there were plenty of gaps in the field. Rohan Ghosh was re-introduced for the final few overs as M&B cruised past 200. Nomads also conceded over 30 extras (inc 26 byes) which did not help their cause.

M & B produced a most impressive tea including both roast pork and roast lamb and generous portions of both. Andy Collins returned several times for seconds and thirds This sumptuous fare was to benefit M & B's performance rather than Nomads sadly.

Brockton and Steele opened up for Nomads but Quereshi cleaned up the Nomads skipper for just 13. Steele and Charlie Peerless looked to rebuild the innings with a watchful partnership, but calamity occurred just when the pair were looking to accelerate. Peerless hit straight to cover and Steele charged down the pitch for a tight single, Peerless sent him back and in the ensuing mix-up Steele was run out for 29 being well short of his ground. Peerless was soon to follow, dragging on a full delivery and when Farhad Raja deposited a long hop from Allen straight into the hands of mid wicket, (99 last Nomads innings,Zero this time!), Nomads were now in dire straits with but Rohan Gosh left of the topm order.

Unfortunately Nomads were now behind the rate, Fanthorpe and Menon were dismissed in quick succession but Ghosh found an ally in keeper Charlie Dickins and the pair progressed positively for the next 15 mins. Although the target seemed a long way off the pair played positive shots, unfortunately finding the field all too often as the younger and more agile M&B fielders swooped to stop many a crunched drive.

Dickens was bowled, Andy Collins was stumped after advancing down the track and failing to hit the ball and President Blumberg batted out the final few overs with Ghosh, who brought up a well deserved 50 with a sweep shot for 4. Nomads closed on 160-9, some 60 runs short of their target, the last wicket having added 30! Allen was the most successful of the bowlers inducing suicidal shots from Nomads.
