Nomads Bowling No Match for Billericay Veterans

Nomads unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt in Essex yesterday when we were defeated by 8(7) wickets. Six Nomads Veterans plus two Bushmen(one veteran, one teenage) assisted by two Billericay members(one veteran, one teenage wicket keeper) took on Billericay Veterans who included a talented a young cheerful Kiwi. Unfortunately both Ted Walters and Bernie Spratt were forced to withdraw rather late in the day.

Nomads won the toss and batted first. Andrew Smith and youngster George Dalby set about the veterans bowling with relish adding 87 in 16 overs whereupon Andy ambitiously cut a straight ball, missed and was bowled. Andrew Gregory 'The Pope' survived a first ball appeal but succumbed to the second and went for a duck. Chris Wilson joined George and these two had taken the score to 134 when the introduction of young Kiwi Houghton lead to George's dismissal for 68(his first ever club fifty). Vince Gavin swung early but picked out a catching fielder to go for one.

Harry Childs joined Wilson and these two added a further 65 before Kiwi Houghton had Childs caught behind. Richard Fanthorpe walloped some fours arguably depriving Wilson of a maiden Nomads fifty as the innings was declared at 209-4 off 40 overs. Billericay opened with the Kiwi and he straight away set about our opening bowlers, 'The Pope' and young George Dabby, with relish. The replacement of Gregory with the slow guile of Andy Smith did little to stem the run flow.

There was a persistant drizzle and the damp ball added to our bowlers problems. Houghton did give a stumping chance but that was all. He retired out on 77 apparently 27 more than the Billericay skipper had proposed! Smith did induce some errors of judgement from both Mehotra and Brown but these two continued to score comfortably until Gregory replacing Dabby 'controversially trapped Mahotra lbw.

Billericay's Skipper Michael Astles joined Brown and knock off the remaining runs with some 9 overs still to go. Most people agreed it would have been a better game if the young Kiwi had batted lower in the order but presumably Billericay's skipper was aware that 209 was normally a total somewhat beyond their resources. Given that we had only three bowlers and a fair bit of batting perhaps we should have fielded first. The discussion will continue!

It was an enjoyable day apart from the result and good to play where former Nomads legend Jack Hyams played out most of his last few years of cricket. Helen Cooper one of our lady members discovered two pictures of her Grandfather in the clubhouse. He had skippered Billericay in the late 1940s!
