Nomads prevail against the Veterans

Nomads won the toss and duly chose to bat first against the Herts Over 60s 3rd XI and made pretty heavy going against some mostly accurate bowling.Seven batsmen made double figures but none stayed to post a big score or take advantage of the ancient fielders.Sunny Fernando and Chris Wilson were top scorers, both falling in the forties. Sunny played a determined knock while 'two new knees' Wilson found the bowling to his liking and scored at almost a run a ball. Nomads had reached 198 by the end of 45 overs and the youthful Gautom Menon was champing at the bit to get in and flay the bowling.

After a wonderful tea Nomads opened up with two Andrews, seam from the 'Pope' Gregory and the slow guile of Andy Smith. Both bowled tightly conceding less than two an over but without taking a wicket despite a near run out of Herts own 'two new knees' batsman Rowswell. Eventually after some comedy with the 'runner' Rowswell was bowled by Smith, soon followed by the run out of the very same runner for but 1 and then Peter Sumner bowled Sheldon for a duck. Herts were in serious trouble now and yet fought back with a series of stands especially that by Dexter and Morris.

It was some good catching from Ghosh, Gregory, Menon and Blumberg that left Herts on the verge of defeat at 9 wickets down with a huge deficit still to make up. However Herts' skipper Scott and Macdonald-Barker, the last pair, enjoyed a productive stand against Nomads' part time bowlers and also survived the returning Andy Smith's two overs. As a result Nomads had won by 29 runs but that last stand had put almost 40 runs!

Both teams enjoyed an extended drink afterwards in the well appointed Abbotts Langley clubhouse.

During the match we were visited by Ranjit Latchman and then later by Tom Brockton and Kie Farrell.

Half the Nomads XI was over 60 and four over 50.
