Nomads flounder in run chase

Nomads dominated this game for long periods and yet lost by ten runs. In view of likely rain breaks it was decided to play an overs match. Nomads skipper won the toss and invited Roydon to bat. Accurate seam bowling from veterans Oliver Croom-Johnson and Andrew Gregory on a slow pitch together with some smart fielding especially in the covers from Alex Dillon restricted Roydon runs. Both bowlers were rewarded with a wicket so both openers were gone for 36 with the run rate under 3. Chris Page replaced Gregory and Sajjad Shawl for a short spell replaced Croomers. Pagie was unlucky, mishits avoiding the fielders or far enough from veteran fielders to be safe . On another day he would have grabbed a couple of caught and bowled chances himself but at Roydon he was to bowl unrewarded without a wicket. Sajjad removed number 3 mishooking tamely to short midwicket,65-3.

Cox joined Frederick and these two put 67 and slowly raised the tempo of the innings scurring many a single as the mostly veteran Nomads fielders proved unable to stem the flow. There were a couple of missed run out chances but by the time Alex Dillon, bowling seam, clean bowled Cox for 34 the likely Roydon total had dramaticaly changed. Yet 150/160 seemed a likely total. Frederick changed that perspective with some fine hitting coupled with poor Nomads fielding so that the innings finished on 187-6 and Frederick unbeaten on 77.

After a splendid tea Kie Fareell and Tom Brockton batted fluently opening with a stand of 104 off 22 overs. Doubtless both batsman had thoughts of repeating the result at Woking and Horsel when Brockton getting frustrated with the sluggish and low bounce managed to smash the wickets and was out for 42. Nomads propensity for self destruction continued with Kie being needlessly run out shortly after for 58,117-2.

Now last year Sajjad scored a century at Roydon. This year he was not to repeat that mighty feat soon miscuing to cow corner for just 2,123-3.  Ross Ormiston joined Alex Dillon and with such an accomplished pair of antipodeans at the crease Nomads remained confident. However the bowling of England, Blemkin and then Hitch  togther with some keen fielding from the young Roydon side thwarted the batsmen's run making so much so that the innings lost momentum and with two overs to go 19 runs were required to win. Dillon was then caught on the long off boundary seeking a boundary six off Hitch and two runs later Ormiston was bowled  picking the wrong ball to cut. Richard Fanthorpe hit 48 here last year and duly clubbed his second ball for 4. So Nomads needed 13 off the last over. Chris Page swung airily twice and missed and then scored a single,Fanthorpe clubbed mightily but missed and was then bowled so The 'Pope' took a single off the last ball. Nomads had lost by 10 runs and Geoff Pond was most amused.

Both sides repaired to the New Inn where Roydon celebrated while Nomads pondered as to how they had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

But that's Cricket!
