Nomads grab win with three balls to spare

Nomads kept their recent good run vs the Ramblers going with a resounding 100 run win at Upper Club. After some recent poor weather seeing many a UK fixture cancelled it was pleasing to arrive in warm and sunny weather.

However after winning the toss Nomads were reduced to 8-2 with Kandampully and Brockton back in the hutch early. Massey and Style, contrasting cricketers, added some 116 for the next wicket only for both to be dismissed , Style (40)  and Massey (70) just after who batted with confidence and controlled aggression.

However their partnership was probably the turning part of the game from a batting perspective and allowed Nomads to push on, KD Desai with an even 50 full of sumptuous strokes, and  Ross Ormiston (29). Nomads lost a few wickets searching for quick runs, including Bill Johnson, bowled neck and crop by Gross.  bowled round his legs for 0 and President Blumberg left stranded having not faced a ball. Nomads a very respectable 238 in 48 overs. Nichols the most impressive of the Ramblers attack.

Nomads were in a buoyant mood, Caunt and Desai were unnerving with the new cherry and with some young feet in the field the general standing of the ground fielding and catching was of a high caliber.

Massey into the game with a smart catch and an even smarter throw to dismiss Tutuka & Cripps respectively. Treon and Gross counter attacked but fell to Bill Johnson, who also dismissed the Ramblers skipper Ed Maidment as he drove loosely and was caught by Desai.

The home side were in all sorts of trouble 57-4 quickly became 93-8 as Chris Page wheeled away wreaking havoc to the lower order who had no answer to his accurate lobbs. The former Sunbury star has started the season well after back issues in 2017.

Overs running out, Forbes and Horne proving obdurate. Brockton turned to Desai and Caunt, the latter trapped Horne LBW for 15 with 2 overs left (Nick Stevenson raising his finger for the first time in 2018). Penultimate over Brockton bowling to Forbes, in-swinger snicked to Wahi who dropped the regulation chance offered. Surely Ramblers would get away with a draw now ? Nomads heads were a little down.

Final over 3 balls left, no 11 clips off his pads and  Forbes calls him through for a single to see out the final over from Caunt, skipper Brockton still chuntering after the Wahi drop swoops at mid-wicket and runs out Forbes with a direct hit, the batsman agonisingly short of his ground as umpire Stevenson raises the finger for the 2nd time in the day, surely a collectors item there !

Nomads win with just three balls remaining, jubilation at Upper Club and suitable libations at the Royal Stag pub in Datchet afterwards where we were joined by members of the Pink Elephants and Chelsea Arts Club Cricket Clubs who had been playing on Agar's Plough.
