Mike Plant century sets up victory

Nomads were victorious at Headley Common on Sunday, a very pretty, ruralbut rusticground where some good competitive cricket was played between the two sides. Tom Brockton won the toss for Nomads and unsurprisingly elected to bat on what looked like a decent track. Small boundaries also ensured a high scoring contestwas in prospect and it seemed from the very first ball opener Mike Plant had the proverbial bit between his teeth lashing the opening delivery from veteran Clark to the point boundary. His opening partner was Shepherds Bush cricketer Sachin Puri who looked in fine touch and the pair added 96 for the opening wicket until Puri smited a leg stump delivery to mid wicket and was well taken for 35.

Brockton joined plant and their enterprising stand realised 95 in 16 overs. The stand was not without incident as Plant, once past a well crafted 50 appeared to snick a delivery from the wayward seamer Smith to skipper/keeper Midmer. Plant was unmoved and the Headley panel umpire did not raise his finger. The home side were incensed and several "choice" words were exchanged between batsmen and opposing fielders. This only appeared to motivate Plant further as he continued to put away the loose delivery with destructive power and timing. Brockton on the other hand was not so lucky as he was run out when seemingly past the stumps and given a rousing send off by the vociferous Pickering (son of the President!) for 47. With overs running out before the declaration Plant reached his 2nd Nomads century with a clip of his pads before being caught at short fine leg for 109 attempting an audacious paddle-sweep. Andrew Smith and Andy "Mighty Mouse" Hill had some fun in the last few overs, with Smith smashing 19 off the final over from his namesake and Hill depositing a huge maximum over the cover boundary. Nomads in a favourable position and able to declare on 263.

After a sumptuous tea Nomads took the field and Will Vincent tore in from the road end bowling with genuine pace and ferocity. However it was his new ball partner Andrew Smith that took the first wicket, deceiving Dickson with his outswinger to peg back the off stump. Skipper Midmer looked like a classy cricketer withsome well timed drives, but he was cut down by Vincent who bowled an unplayable yorker to knock over the Headley skipper for 38. Nomads were in the ascendancy and the introduction of leg-spinner Haider Kamal only continued Nomads advantage as he bowled with great guile to pick up a 4 wicket haul in his spell, the Headley middle order blown away buy his quick leg-breaks.

Headley were now on the rack at 119-7 and as the 20 overs started it appeared there could only be one result. Clearly the feisty Pickering had other ideas and he began a one-man assault on the Nomads bowlers, cross batting his way to an unbeaten 50. Brockton introduced himself and Plant into the attack without success and it was not until the introduction of diminutive off-spinner Ben Hyam that Nomads had another genuine sniff of victory. Hyam took the final wickets to fall, the final scalp of Geoff Moon being well held by Andy Hill with just 8 balls of the match remaining. Nomads retired to the bar, victorious by exactly 50 runs and buoyed by their win stayed long into the evening with much to discuss. Thanks to Headley CC for an enjoyable contest.
