Nomads mighty seven fail the challenge

Nomads returned to Leigh after a lapse of some 15 years with a predominently mature side but one with a formidable batting line up which one would have thought would chased down the target set comfortably. In the event we failed miserably with only Mike Plant making a major innings.
Several Nomads arrived late so the start of play was delayed and a 40/40 match agreed. Leigh won the toss and batted first. Their opening pair put on 83 for the first wicket, Smith aggressive from the start was badly dropped at long off, one of several dropped catches that did little to curb the flow of runs from our indifferent attack. Only Andy Smith was economical.

Teenage  Harrington hit his first club fifty and wicket keeper Cox carried his bat to set Nomads a target of 227 to win.
After a mighty tea Andy Peters drove the first ball through the covers for four but  Nomads were soon in trouble at the other end as skipper Brockton fell for a duck, Andy Peters drove once too often and early and was caught thus terminating an elegant and  entertaining cameo while Charles Peerless wandered out of his crease and was needlessly run out,39-3.   Nathan Lamb fell to a good and high catch at gulley for a duck and so Nomads were digging an early grave. A stand of 30 between Ayub and Andy Smith restored confidence for a while but then Andy mishit the wild but swift Hall and was caught,69-5.

From the moment he arrived at the crease Mike Plant set about the Leigh bowling with many a powerful shot and while Ayub kept him company, struggling to find his touch, victory still seemed possible. However he fell lbw at 112 leaving Mike Plant a lot to do. Charlie Dickins stayed with him for a good while but frustratingly Plant did not have much of the strike as another 45 was added. As the overs were running out fast Plant attacked the bowling with Ali Bilgrani as his partner, yet he still found the lack of pace in the pitch frustrating. These two added another 28 runs before Plant having a mighty swish with three balls to go was stumped. This left the President with two balls to face and 42 runs to get. He chose to defend and so we lost by 41 runs. The invariably young Leigh side had fielded very well and deserved to win.

Nomads were to enjoy several more hours at Leigh enjoying the company of  very friendly opponents, a lot of ale and lager and very tasty hot snacks. So as the sun sank behind the distant trees Nomads left Leigh with a memories of a fine day with most hospitable opponents..captured excellently in the many phographs taken by Andy Smith..and yet we should have played better!
