Nomads have a memorable day at the pretty Ley Hill Ground

Charles Peerless bats                                              The Smiths at rest

NPL were bizarrely unable to raise a side so a quick and fortuitous call to the Club Cricket Conference paired Nomads up with Ley Hill CC, a pretty postage stamp of a ground near Chesham.

Nomads won the toss and elected to bat, Brockton and Olly Smith opening up for the visitors.  Unfortunately Smith's stay was not a memorable one and he was bowled neck and crop in the 7th over for just 4.  Brockton was finding the bowling more to his liking as he raced to 35 in just 9 overs before snicking to 1st slip with a flat footed drive.

Charlie Peerless and Andy Hill kept the scoreboard moving at a good pace, Hill looking in good touch before unfortunately picking out the lone fielder on the cover boundary who after a juggling exercise that some of Jerry Cottle's troup would be proud of, held the catch. Hill on his way for 17. The only genuinely substantial partnership of the Nomads innings materialised via Peerless and Andrew Smith who negotiated the "spin" of the Ley Hill captain Paul Green with consummate ease. Smith had got to 28 when he went the aerial route, no doubt eyeing up the small boundary on one side of the ground and was taken on the extra cover rope. Peerless was soon to follow after registering his first half century of the season, a welcome return to form for Nomads classy no3.

With overs running out before the declaration Keith Alexander and Sachin Puri forged an assertive partnership to get Nomads up to and over the 250 mark. Alexander weighing in with a valuable knock of 37 and Puri 42 not out. Nomads declaring on 252-7 from 42 overs.

After an enjoyable tea in the rustic surroundings Nomads opened up with speedster Will Vincent and senior Pro Andrew Smith taking the new cherry.  As per usual Smith was quickly into his stride with Danny Buckland taking the plaudits behind the stumps with a fine catch.  Vincent at the other end was troubling both batsmen with his extra pace and bounce but remained wicketless. Smith, although more expensive than usual was rewarded with a 2nd wicket courtesy of a fine catch from his son back-peddling at mid off.

However, Ley Hill's 2 1st XI batsmen were now at the crease and after a watchful start the boundaries began to flow.  Brockton turned to off-spinner Puri and experienced cricketer Keith Alexander to stem the flow of runs, both did the job asked of them and Alexander picked up a couple of key scalps (LBW and ct Peerless).  Nomads were now back in the ascendancy but overs were running out to claim the victory.  Brockton replaced Puri and immediately struck as did Smith, back on for a 2nd spell.  A rare 2013 bowl for Peerless yielded a wicket and Oli Smith knocked over the no10 with captain Green stranded at the other end. Ley Hill all out for a shade under 200 with 3 overs of the final 20 remaining.  Nomads had run out winners by just over 50 runs in a very enjoyable and well played fixture.

We look forward to playing at Ley Hill CC again in years to come
