Brockers hits 151 but bowlers fail to force win
Nomads won the toss and batted first. Ramblers' bowlers encouraged by a fast and bouncy pitch resorted to a lot of short pitched bowling which Nomads batsmen often found difficult to counter. when bowled straight A series of mispulls and hooks may have scuppered Nomads innings but the luck was tNomads as square leg Alfie Walters spilled several chances.
Amidst the mis chances however Keith Alexander miscued and was caught on 9. As lunch approached Ross Ormiston went to turn a slower ball to leg only to present a leading edge and the ball was easily taken by square leg running in. A few balls later Andy Smith attempted an ambitious pull and again square leg took the catch, brother Hugh Walters now had three cathes to his name!
At the other end Brockton taking full advantage of his early food fortune was building a fine innings with many a crisp cut through the off side field and indeed for quite a period 150 to 180 seemed to be a likely lunch time score. However as Brockers edged towards 90 and beyond the run rate subsided in part due to Ross Ormiston's problem with finding gaps, time and again he stroked the ball straight to a fielder. In the end lunch was taken with the score 135-3 off 30 odd overs.
After a splendid lunch which lingered on a little too long, in retrospect, Brockton and Kandampully accelerated with Brockton quickly reaching a fine century. Vic at the other end was very busy and a trifle unlucky to larrap a mighy pull to square leg only for the fielder to take a good catch. The Walters brothers had now caught all four of the wickets to fall with Alfie finally holding a catch. Young Marcus Budgen joined Brockers and these two pummelled the bowling to enable a declaration of 251 off 49 overs.
Shawl and Vithiani soon removed both openers and then Bill Johnson removed the powerful Maidment caught behind by Alexander and then took two wickets followed quickly with Shawl trapping Roy lbw for but 1 while at the other end Johnson bowled Fairfax for a duck playing a horrid slog. Ramblers were now 45-5.
Ramblers' skipper counter attacked to good effect including one huge six. However this encouraged another mighty shot, not quite as well hit, and Victor Kandampully raced round the boundary to take a brilliant diving catch leaving Rambers 85-6. Nomads seemed to be heading towards an overwhelming victory and yet Milne and Marq steadied the innings adding 48 before Milne slapped an off drive straight to Mike Robbins at mid off. Shortly afterwards Mike Robbins bowled Grootenhoos,139-8.
Marq and Alfie Walters survived a period of probing spin from Ross Ormiston and then Marcus Budgen but it was the returning Shawl who had Marq caught down the leg side by Alexander,170-9 with several overs still to go. To much vociferous vocal support from the Ramblers pavilion balcony Cobbold and Alfie Walters defied the Nomads bowlers to draw the match. Alfie Walters had certainly done much to recoup his esteem with his team mates after those dropped catches.
Nomads repaired to the Royal Stag in Datchet for some hours afterwards celebrating a magnificent day, the finest of the summer so far, yet wondering now and again quite why they had not won.
