The Gooding Pinter Lamb Memorial Cricket Match
An annual cricket match played by members and friends of Gaieties CC in memory of Ossie St C Gooding and Harold Pinter and for the second year between Nomads CC and Gaieties and this year adding G Charlton Lamb
Ossie Gooding Charlton Lamb Harold Pinter
2013 is the seventy sixth year since Gaieties CC was founded and 110 years since Nomads was founded.
For the field is full of shades as I near a shadowy coast,
And a ghostly batsman plays to the bowling of a ghost,
And I look through my tears on a soundless-clapping host
As the run stealers flicker to and fro,
To and fro:
O my Ossie and my Harold and my Charlton long ago!

Nomads run chase fizzles out
Nomads squandered the chance of a 2nd win of the season vs Gaieties as their batting fell away in the face of some impressive spin bowling. After a negotiated toss Hugo Thurston of the Gaieties batted first as young Harry Bell and experienced Barnes cricketer Andy Collins took the new cherry for Nomads. Gaieties moved on relatively untroubled although Bell beat the bat on a couple of occasions, until skipper Brockton brought himself into the attack and struck early in his spell removing the opening bat LBW with a nip-backer than trapped him plum in front. Harry Bell then produced an over of real quality, and with shades of Holding vs Boycott his final ball of the over crashed into the timbers leaving Gaieties two down after 15 overs.
The familiar face of occasional Nomad Shomit Dutta batted with surprising patience and his off-side game has clearly developed as he crashed debutant Chris Chambers, who had replaced Bell (11 overs 1 for 43) to the point boundary twice in his opening over. Brockton was beating the bat of the Gaieties left handed no3 and had no less than 4 slips in the cordon looking for the edge, but alas he was to take no further wickets and after 10 overs, conceding only 18 runs he was replaced by the returning Collins who then immediately struck removing the leftie whose luck had now run out when he was taken by the bucket like hands of Nathan Lamb at long off.
Ali Bulgrani also struck to remove Dutta the ball after he reached a well deserved 50 but Hugo Thurson and Mark Ramprakash look-a-like Tariq Choueri wielded the willow gamefully and Gaieties improved their run rate in the final 30 mins before they declared. Bulgrani came in for some punishment as did Collins, although Thurston was also stumped (making it 3 stumping’s for Andy Hill) in the final overs. Gaieties declaring after 45 overs on 222-6. Unfortunately Nomads had let their earlier good work slip and Gaieties had scored around 25-30 more runs than they actually should have due to some ill-disciplined bowling and lacklustre fielding.
Unfortunately there was no “Gooding Caribbean Feast” this year due to work commitments of the Gooding family, however a good traditional tea was provided by Old Hamptonians.
Kie Farrell and Charlie Peerless opened up for Nomads knowing they would get only 38-40 overs to chase down 223 to win and would need to go at over 5 ½ runs per over to successfully overhaul the Gaieties total. The pair had added 50 in quick time when Peerless was bowled by a beauty. Nathan Lamb took up the challenge and his bright and breezy 22 was book-ended by two glorious cover drives. Unfortunately he drilled a straight drive back at the overly enthusiastic Choueri (whose bowling action certainly merited further inspection) and was on his way. Barnes CC man Chris Chambers and Farrell took Nomads to the start of the 20 overs and looked to be taking the game away from the Gaieties who were making a number of ultimately unsuccessful bowling changes.
The game changed with the unfortunate run out of Farrell who had past 60 and was now finding his timing. He had hit the shot of the day with a crunching cover drive off the bowling of Nick Cowley but as he took on Matt Burton’s arm from midwicket he was found short of his ground after keeper Davidson removed the bails, Farrell gone for 66. Hill was bowled attempting an ambitious lofted stroke and Brockton joined Chambers but the run rate had now increased and with Dutta and Choueri bowling accurately with well placed in/out field positions the pair struggled. Chambers perished in the pursuit of runs, caught by the overly excitable Choueri at fly slip and he celebrated like he had just won the ICC Champions Trophy! Truly theatrical! Chambers was quickly joined back in the pavilion by Jeremy Lascelles and the burly Collins who courageously gave up their wickets for the cause.
From probable defeat Gaieties now thought they were in with a sniff of victory as president Blumberg strode confidently to the crease. However, his defence was sound and along with Brockton batted out the final 3 overs to secure the draw. Nomads closing some 30 runs shy of victory. The expensive final 5 overs had clearly cost Nomads so a draw was to be settled for.
After the match Gaieties Chairman Roger Davidson said a few words in memory of Ossie Gooding,Harold Pinter and Charlton Lamb whereupon Mathew Burton read some verses from Francis Thompson's poem At Lord's with all present plagiarizing the last lines as Ossie,Harold and Charlton were substituted for Hornby and Barlow. Then all raised their glasses to toast the memories of these three cricketers so dear to Nomads and Gaieties.
