Untidy bowling so Nomads lose for first time since Blackheath

Nomads were beaten for the first time since suffering defeatto a strong Blackheath side in early May, a run spanning 13 matches.  James Midmer of Headley won the toss andinserted the Nomads. The wicket had a full covering of grass, and the ball certainlyzipped around in the early stages. However, with relatively short boundariesthe batters got value for their shots when they were able to connect.

Brockton and Farrell put on 64 for the first wicket beforeFarrell was caught at deep point off an uppish square drive. Rupert Style camein at no3 & looked in good touch with three crunching cover drives for 4before he and Brockton were both adjudged LBW. Nomads on the back-foot, but Ross Ormiston, back after a 4 week lay offwith a torn calf, and Hugo Morris (suffering a reoccurrence of a strained back)put together a strong partnership to get Nomads to 150 without furtheralarm.  Ormiston was then bowled by the firstball of Headley’s Dimitri Mascaranas  look-a-like, the former Hertfordshirecricketer pegging back Ormiston’s off stump with a quick Yorker.

Morris then went in the back and had to retire hurt, a shameas he was striking the ball nicely. However, the momentum in the innings waskept alive by young Middlesex U15 all-rounder Tanmay, making his Nomads debut. He batted with maturity beyond his years to score 42 not out and see thevisitors to 209 from just over 40 overs. Headley would receive somethingsimilar in reply.

Nomads had an untested new ball attack of Tanmay &Sulimen and although Sulimen took 2 wickets (bowled and LBW) he was expensiveand bowled a number of full tosses.  Incomparison Tanmay bowled too short and was swatted for several boundaries.Skipper Brockton turned to himself and experienced campaigner Chris Page.  Page unfortunately was completely off colour, bowling too full and being dispatched. He went at 10 an over before beingremoved from the attack and sent down to fine leg to lick his wounds.

Brockton was swinging the ball and took an early wicket(bowled) but the Burly Dimi Mascaranas was hitting the ball well and brought uphis 50 before being bowled himself. This aggressive innings took Headley to theverge of victory.  Barton supplied thecoup de grasse swatting a big 6 to win the game, batting with Headley’s skipperMidmer. Headley winning by 5 wickets with plenty of overs left.

Many of the Nomads remained for a cold beer or three atHeadley cricket club before retiring to the Cock Inn just down the road towatch Brazil play in the world Cup. Our thanks to Headley CC for hosting us yet again
