 Sachin Puri & Brockers celebrate unbeaten tons 

Nomads continued their good run of form with a convincing victory vs Buccaneers at St Pauls School in Barnes. Under cloudy skies and with the threat of occasional drizzle Simon Woolfries won the toss and unsurprisingly inserted the Nomads. With the wicket looking a little mottled in places and the outfield lush, this was going to be hard going for the batting side. The in-form Mike Plant opened up with young Shepherds Bush protégé Sachin Puri, but their stand was to be a short one as Plant was LBW for just 5.

Marcus Budgen (watched by many of the Budgen clan) looked in good touch finding the boundary on 3 occasions in his assertive knock of 23. However he was also to be victim of the panel umpires finger as he went back to experienced seamer Brandes’ 2nd ball and was also leg before. With some rain in the air and Nomads firmly on the back foot skipper Tom Brockton joined Puri and they forged a watchful unbroken partnership that took Nomads to the lunch interval without further loss and on 108-2.

Barnes CC’s Andy Collins supplied a sumptuous lunch and luckily the arriving drizzle abated in the nick of time for Buccaneers to re-take the field with only a 10 minute delay. Brockton and Puri looked to up the scoring rate but the introduction of the impressive Patel who bowled unchanged for 19 overs with a mixture of off and leg-spin stunted the pairs progress. With runs flowing freely at the other end and the pair now finding the boundary with increasing regularity Woolfries introduced himself into the attack. Alas, he was dispatched and his 2 overs went for 19. The Nomads pair of Brockton and Puri were now both well past 50, and with the field pushed back were milking the bowling scoring at 6 an over.

With 200 now up on the board and time running out before a declaration could be made the Nomads pair took the attack to the Buccaneers bowlers. Both players were now into the 90s and then within one ball of each other, both off the bowling of Brandes, had reached well deserved centuries. The declaration promptly came with Nomads very favourably placed on 237-2. With such a slow outfield this was not far off the equivalent of 300.

Buccaneers had 45 mins until the tea interval but they went into the break at 12-2 with new ball speedsters Sajjad Shawl and Barnes 1st XI opening bowler Jarrod Schmidt tearing in. Shawl uprooted the off stump of the hapless Chakravarti (who Shawl bowled with an identical delivery in the 2012 encounter) and Schmidt was well rewarded with a scalp, also bowled with the batsman offering no shot.

After the tea break there was no let up for the Buccaneers, Schmidt and Shawl both took another wicket a-piece and after 18 overs Buccaners were faltering at 27-4. The introduction of David Steele did not improve their prospects as he took a wicket in his first over. Patel tried to counter attack and hit a couple of lusty blows through the on-side off the bowling of Ben Smith. However Smith had the last laugh as he dismissed Patel with a full ball that the burly all-rounder clipped to Sachin Puri at wide mid on. A dive forward was needed but Puri held on.

Less can be said about Schmidt who dropped the easiest of chances at mid wicket when Brandes top-edged a sweep off the bowling of David Steele. Egg on face for the Barnes 1st XI cricketer! However this was not to be costly as some fleet footed fielding from Michael Blumberg at short fine leg stopped a certain run, with the next ball resulting in a mix up and a run out as Woolfries and Brandes were stranded mid pitch. Danny Buckland, impressive all day behind the sticks, was cool and collected as he threw to the bowler Budgen and the run out of Woolfries was completed.

The 20 overs started and Buccaneers were in dire straits, 75-7. Shawl was re-introduced to the attack to replace the impressive Steele (1-21 from 11) and in tandem with Mike Plant they wrapped up the game with some 7 overs remaining. Shawl ending with outstanding figures of 4-14 from 11 overs. The last two wickets being no10 Close clean bowled with a nip-backer from Shawl and then Shawl / Plant combining brilliantly with the latter taking a superb catch at first slip to end the match. Gwyn was left unbeaten, but Buccaneers were rolled out for exactly 100 and Nomads victorious by the considerable margin of 137 runs.
