Rare Nomads seam attack routs OJS

What threatened to be a disaster, as we had only five confirmed players on Wednesday morning, turned out to be a great success as a predominently young Nomads eleven outplayed an even younger Old Johnians side who included the son of former Nomad wicket keeper/batsman Alan MacDanel.

OJs won the toss and invited Nomads to bat and play began on a cloudy morning at 11.43am. Lascelles and Fletcher made a bright start adding 51 runs in just over 10 overs before Nick Fletcher had an abberation and played across a short slow long hop from spinner Anderson. Nick Cooper joined Jeremy and these two added a comfortable 67 in 14 overs, Nick sweeping productively while Jeremy drove to good effect. The ancient skipper joined Jeremy just before lunch who reached his fifty with a boundary then blocked for the interval until a moment of madness overtook him and he skied to deepish mid off.

At lunch Nomads were well placed with 140 on the board and three wickets down. Ian Irvine enjoyed his lunch and drove mightily afterwards. However this seemed to unhinge the skipper who attempting a similar shot outside edged to slip running back taking the catch over his head. Ian seemed set for a very big score when he miscued on 44 and was caught. Nomads at 191-5 should have added rather more in the next ten overs but were in fact bowled out for 219 well short of target on a good batting track. The left arm spinner recorded the very respectable figures of 6-53.

Once Ian Irvine had got his radar sorted out several wickets fell leaving OJs at 44-4 very much on the back foot. Vosser and Macdanel added 42 valuable runs before three wickets fell for one run, two to James-right arm fast and one to Harry MacDonald-left arm fast, reducing OJs to 89-7.

Perhaps because of bowling 20 wides the umpires requested Nomads to bowl their overs faster!

The OJs tail added 75 runs in 14 overs before despite taking some punishment Tom Lascelles took rwo wickets. Harry Macdonald undoubtedly would have taken many more than his two but ECB rules forbade him from bowling more than six overs on the trot!

The catering at this match was superb and the early cloud cover disappeared to give way to a fine sunny afternoon and evening and splendid day's cricket.

PS. Sadly Ian Irvine who also brought two damsels with him to the match has failed to play for us since as has Don MacLeod's son Rory. The MacDonald brothers played for us again through 2006 summer but not thereafter!(2013)
